removing 2k?

What is 2k paint normally like to strip from a panel.
Reason I ask is it am having lots of problems removing the paint from various parts of the car I am doing. The car is a 61 Consol Capri. Ori colour is grey and it must have had a respray in the past and I believe that it was done by sanding the original paint to form a key (but not remove) then primed and painted. The problem I have is that in the areas where this respraying has been done is as tough as old boots. If I use a sanding disk with say 36 grit it clogs to the point of not removing any paint in a few passes. The primer under it is also the same. Even tried an angle grinder to knock it off but that clogs as well. Ended up using a knotted wire brush on angle grinder and that struggled to shift.
The paint is quite old so it’s not a case of it still being soft from a recent paint.
Is this typical of 2k?, hope not cos there are quite a few places it look to have been used.

Have to say. Sounds like synthetic paint to me mate. Its not easy to remove but will have to go if you want to re finish.

Synthetic as in not 2k? I even tried the teeth side of a hacksaw blade!! even that struggled.
So how much dynamite might be required ?
Would have got a new wing but at £500 + for a repro will stick to repairing.

Correct. 2k will be stable enough after 24hrs to flat without clogging. Paint stripper will probably soften it enough to scrape it off but its messy. Have you tried fibre disc on a grinder?

Have you tried a hot air gun and a sharp scraper ? one of the ones that takes Stanley blades, the heat might soften it enough for you to scrape it off.

I've been stripping paint with these 115mm abrasive fleece discs. Rips the paint off and polishes the metal in no time compared to a wire cup or knotted brush with less damage. Drawback is they wear quickly especially if you catch any edges. Not tried a full panel yet but the large areas I have done impressed me at the speed of surface preparation, tough on paint and soft on metal.

Think that's what you guys are on about. Worked better but still some clogging. Had to every now and then run on block of steel to clear.
Have not bothered with them todate as have managed with the usual flap disks ect.
Going to be a pain when I need to strip whole car. Still at the rate I am going it's going to quite a while before I need to worry about that. Ronan reluctant to use heat as panels are likely to pop out of shape/distort, had that already.

Try using a vairiable speed electric buffer with 80 grit or 40 (or whatever your using) and have it set on the lowest speed. When your using a grinder at full speed your basically just melting the paint.

I have had a little residue buildup from those discs, I put that down to me treating it like a sanding disc and hanging around letting the nylon of the disc melt. Have you tried wiping the panel with cellulose thinners? Did this a few days ago on a bike frame that was probably repainted in the early 70's and in no time I had the laim rubbing down marks showing in the original 1962 Honda paint.

Don't have variable speed but do use 240 grinders via a 110 transformer which does reduce speed (and noise!). You are pretty much right with the "melting" effect.
So is this 2K that behaves like this?
