Bit OT but you peeps seems to have all the sensible answers. Well, sometimes...
We've finally decided to replace the awful fireplace in the front room and I'm looking for a bit of advise from someone who's done it before. Normally I leave the bricks as-is, bar any major pointing or making good. Unfortunately this one's had a back boiler in it and it's left a bit of a mess as you can see. I'm going to patch this in and render the inside. That's where the advice is needed
What do you normally render the inside of the fireplace with? I'm guessing that standard portland is going to crack badly? Googling gives endless opinions and what I want is someone who's done it to say "Yah, do it zat way"
Never used lime based mortars but have a feeling they're probably more suited? Only stove will be in fireplace, no open flames. Clearance is about four to six inch on all sides. The rear part where the back exit flue is going will be about an inch from the wall. Expected flue temp (from maker's plate) is just shy of 290°C.
Final finish does not (nor will it ever be with my 'skillz') need to be perfection personified. A flat but rough surface would be fine.
Any particular paints recommended for on top as well?
