Replacement switch on bench grider

I have an old,no name bench grider,requiring a switch replacement,it’s big 8”,at least 1hp,if not 1.5,how do I specify a new one to search for,is it as simple as watts divided by volts,to give amps,plus a bit for starting? Thanks.

In principle, yes. The other thing to consider is duty cycle - how many times a day you will be operating it.

A lot of the modern grinders seem to have a simple on-off rocker switch, maybe with a rubber boot to slow down the ingress of metallic dust.

You could find an equivalent power Sealey model and see what they offer as a spare part as their spares provision is quite good.

I would go for something like this KJD17 IP55 rated switch, its a no-volt release style so if the power fails it wont start back up until you press the go button, think they can cope with up to 16amp single phase motors

20amp Double pols switch Maplins fitted after the original died.

Drilled the holes I the plate to M4 and fitted Nylocks.

The switch was then rewired do down is off.

Here,looks like a capacitor,but I don’t know how to wire in a 2 terminals switch,as there’s live on the same side as neutral.

It should just be L & N in and L & N out, with the capacitor wired across the output (motor) terminals

Any 2 gang switch of the appropriate load rating should do. An NVR would be ideal but not essential, I think, for a grinder. I like the idea above of getting an IP55 rated one to keep the dust out.

2 gang i bet u mean double pole . a 20 amp metal one will be ok. it dont need to be a nvr

What is wrong with the old switch? Mechanically broken or pixies not dancing correctly?

Disconnect it, ultrasonic clean, 48h in the airing cupboard, then buff the contacts and it will be better than most you will buy today.

Like that idea,don’t have an ultrasonic cleaner,would the vegetable steamer do the same,when the wife’s out?

You are thinking along dangerous lines. Being shot for a sheep is better than being shot for a lamb, so the dishwasher would make a good job of it. Even slip it into a sock and a 60 degree cycle in the washing machine.
