I've got a 25HP outboard here and I'm in a wee dilemma as to how to fix it given its faults. Here's a bit of back story.
It's a mid-nineties two stroke Mercury Sea Pro made in Belgium. It stood for about five years and started no problems when it was brought back into commission (not by me). Unfortunately towards the end of its 15 minute commissioning session it abruptly stopped and wouldn't restart. Problem was diagnosed to a cracked magnet in one of the coilpacks. This was replaced but the engine still wouldn't start and it's at this point I inherited it
The engine's symptom is no spark. Not a weak one, just absolutely nothing. There's two problems I can see causing this: (a) one of the flywheel magnets has broken off and (b) it's damaged a stator coil. Pictures show the damaged bits.
Now here's my dilemma. It's originally an engine that was more US based in sales by look of it. That means all the decent second hand gear is overseas. That makes is expensive to ship. The stuff over here isn't that good as the selection is small and that also makes it expensive. So I got to thinking; the only things actually wrong are a broken off bit of magnet and a damaged wire.
So what I'm thinking is to remove the broken magnet and replace it, probably doing the other side at the same time for peace of mind. The stator coils should be rewindable so that's what I'd do to them.
My only issue is that I've never done this before and never heard of anyone doing it. That generally means it's a less than stellar idea! So I'm looking for anyone who's done similar to what I'm thinking about and to ask:
I'll be very grateful for any (useful, natch) responses to the above

- What level of success did you have?
- What was the cost like?
