Replacing an optrel satellite

My trusty optrel satellite has died

Tried to replace the batteries and ended up with a broken helmet

A new insert is £199 plus Vat but a new optrel e680 is £204 plus VAT

So before i spend a lot on a new welding helmet is there anything as good as an optrel as i also have a £40 ebay special and its awful

A speedglas 9100u Is what I have and marginally cheaper than the optrel. Many including me use them day in day out with out problem though can be a bit bulky and heavy with an airfed unit attached.

I have the same lid, I bought it around 6/7yrs ago, works a treat, the same time as a mate bought one and ran over it within weeks. Not wishing to spend that much and run over it again, he's bought around 5 lids in that time all breaking down. Costing him well over the 200quid a new Optrel would have cost

I have an Optrel Satellite Evolution, must be a good half-dozen years old and has done less work than a Scouser I keep meaning to buy some new outer shields for it, it's got a bit marked from all the helmet-polishing I do

You seem to like it so why not, you'll kick yourself if you buy other make and don't like it, even if doesn't cost much

Unless you're welding really low amp stuff and need the 5-9 shade, then the Optrel E650 or E670 will do you fine. They are standard 9-13, with the E670 having the option of the auto function.

If you had a Satellite before then you'll appreciate the quality aspect of the more expensive helmets.
Lincoln do a very nice Viking 3350 in a range of fetching designs from tastefull to tasteless depending on what you like.
It has a 5-9 range, a 9-13 range, grind function and a viewing window about twice the size of most of the competition, I bought one myself to replace my failed Optrel Orion sand I've been very impressed with it.

where did you buy that Jim? I'm in the market for a decent helmet also, For the viking it looks like about 200 euro from ebay USA seems the best ('bout 170 GBP).

I havnt the foggiest about helmets, other than I've been using an optrel satellite for the last few days, I liked it a lot, and I need me a helmet of similar quality.
So far today ive been looking at esab, spedglas, and now this Viking 3350.

its a bit like buying a welder! so many choices

My local boc depot has just started doing the Lincoln 3350 helmet at £150 +vat,
looks a good mask, infact its virtually the same spec as my Miller elite with the dials/not digital which was around £200
