replacing fuel tank/handle on Stihl chainsaw

an 038 AV...has a cracked fuel tank, put it in for repair but they said the chance of getting a replacement tank was slim and not worth stripping it, not sure if they wouldn't consider using copy parts or just not interested but...have found the these 3rd party replacements and a few others on eBay and pretty set on getting one to try fix it myself, are they likely all made by the same company or are there some better quality than others?

with luck originals will turn up on flea bay, if folk do in cranks etc the plastics tend to get sold on or kept , try a local saw repair guy if there is one , you may get lucky , but against it , it will be the same age as the saw , and for it , it will be the same quality as the original.

The cheepanese bits I've used for our saws and kerb cutters all needed a bit of fetteling to fit well . But they've all gone on .

L&S engineering have them, sit down, £108 a piece. I’d give the aftermarket one a go

+1 on this, if you have a Dremel handy they are fine. You can always tell though, which doesn't help resale value, as they are often different shades of orange/white to the genuine components

thankyou all...very positive replies, don't have any experience of stripping/rebuilding (specifically) chainsaws but it's hopefully within the scope of my abilities/means...looking forward to it

In general, Stihl stuff is very easy to work on, you shouldn't have any issues

I agree with the repair shop . it's money for them but likely to be a waste of time for you . What is their hourly rate ? multiply it by four ( it's not just the work but also the office & consumables costs as well add in not just the cost of the tank So add in the gaskets , fuel tubes & seals breather cap . They'd also likely change the on, off switch as good practice. add new air filters ?

I expect you'd expect them to put some sort of warrantee on the machine & when it dies six weeks later expect them to honour it. If it died early & there was no warrantee , it cost you say 320 plus VAT , I'm sure you'd wail it on the hill so even here down in South Wales we could hear you.

Commercial sense says it ain't going to happen , not when you can buy a brand new chainsaw of a different brand & equally as good for around £150 . .

Cheap copies of things like that often have slightly different sized crank oil seal seating's , mounting holes different type of materials used that fail early etc. It's always a sound engineering practice to use OEM's that way the repair shop usually has a come back if they die early .
Would you expect the repair shop to buy in a new part only to find such a tiny difference rendered the completed job useless & bear the costs themselves .

There is an old saying in the plant hire business ... "Never buy a second hand chain saw " . It's either stolen or knackered . it's a rare day when someone says I'll sell a good chainsaw for the hell of it , that's for sure.

You are in luck Mr Smashweld, there is a nest of six of them and one of them is a bitza. I will strip it out and check the tank is ok and send it off. PM an address and stick a fiver in one of the kiddies charity box`s and its yours.

thanks again @8ob for the new tank ...took me a while to get it done (new job etc etc!) but all working now , only thing that needed replaced was the impulse line hose..cracked at the end after taking it off so ordered a new fuel filter at the same time
gave it a good clean when it was apart - was tempted to take it more apart and paint it but came to my senses!
