respirator/mask

Been doing some welding in my shed, its only small about 10ftx8ft, windy out today so no practice in the garden. Left the doors wide open, but the fumes where coming off the metal. I was welding on old car wings with the paint still on the outside so i think thats what was giving off the main fumes. Is it advisible to wear a mask and what sort, would them cheap disposible dust masks be ok or something better?

el cheapo dust masks are totally useless. Without going to the expense of an air fed system, you want minimum 'FFP2' or 'FFP3' disposable fume masks, or replaceable cartridge mask job

get a decent resperator from arco they do the sundstom ones. the 3m throw away ones are ok for dust and crap but thats about all

yes cromell tools do them as well they give the spec sheet on various filters look up sundstom filters on google its an abek 1 gas filter

Thats it, something like that, i will invest in one off them come pay day. Realised welding is not just about getting a welder, gas and mask, plenty off other things to take into account.

Hi All.

I saw two 3M dustmaster air resprators for sale on Ebay, too late to find out anything about them so just let it go but are they any good, can they be used while welding stainless, and can they be used while wearing a Speedglas 9000F helmet?

You could try putting an eight inch extractor fan at the far end of the shed and rig up some ducting from your workbench to the fan. Might want the fan at a lower level as some gases are heavier than air. The only thing is you will need to cut out a piece of the shed for the extraction, but once done will give good air flow moving from the shed door to the fan. I bought an extractor for about £40, good investment!
