Have been rejuvinating a nice little Atlas Copco quiet housing, oil free compressor over the last week or so and have needed a few parts,
The reason this unit was taken out of service was because it wouldn't run, as in totally dead. First thing found and what I suspected initially was the thermal fuse had failed, that was replaced with a resetable trip. Then when power was applied the motor just hummed and hunted, prime suspect, motor run cap. Examination showed slight bulging and a couple of splits. Found a new replacement, fault cured. Compressor then ran perfectly.
Then I ran over it generally looking for any other issues. The only thing found was a decomposing foam intake air filter. Called an Atlas dealer for a laugh to enquire the genuine replacement part price. More of a complete sense of humour failure when I heard the price, only available in packs of 3 at a price of £85 odd plus vat and £10 carriage !!!
This for a little plastic frame and a foam ring about 80mm o.d. x 30mm thick !!
So, stuff that !
So today I made a few replacements out of polyester fibre wadding, just marked out and cut with good sharp scissors. Better than the original and cost nothing as I had a piece of suitable material on the shelf. Works perfectly
So, for the cost of a new cap at about £9 and a few hours time this discarded compressor is now running perfectly and ready for work.
It was discarded from service by a government organisation !!
