Rifle rest

I finally made something that I'm pleased enough with to share. The threaded bolt and the thing it screws into are from an old motorbike stand. For padding, I just slip a piece of pipe insulation over the top. The welding is pretty shoddy, but I'm pleased with the design, and the fact that it actually works.

So far I've only used it for zeroing a .22 LR, but it's really intended for use with my .308. I'll probably need to add some uprights to form a U shape - otherwise I think the recoil might make the rifle jump off the stand each round.

Shouldn't be a problem. Nearly all my fullbore shooting is on Century range at Bisley - fixed target at up to 600 yds. Anyway, now I'll have something else to blame if I shoot badly.

in that case i'll shut up lol i'd be tempted to use a set up similar to a one piece scope mount to stop the gun jumping off the stand but not too tight that it can still travel back on the recoil, i've seen a similar thing used by americans, if i can remember the name i'll get a photo as i don't think i've explained myself very well

I made a similar sor tof thing for my pcp air rifle when I had it but I just used the base of a crap halfrauds axle stand, machined a plug to go in with an m10 hole and then a bit of box with an m10 bolt welded on. they are handy things to have, will probably find myself making another when I get round to buying a .223

Thats a nice job......I have made rifle rests out of old scissor jacks with a suitable padded u welded to the top and spikes to the bottom to stick in the ground.......worked a treat with me old parker hale t4

that's a good idea, adjustable rest would be handy

not sure if this is of any use, but I have zeroed rifles by fixing them, looking through the bore onto summat a known distance away and then tweaking the scope graticules on to said same object,I came up with that coz could not fire to zero.
I pinched the idea from boresighting a bigger piece of kit.
I expect shooters know about it, but thought I would bung it in in case its of use to someone.

It is a useful method to get you on paper, particularly when using commercially produced center-fire ammo at over £1.50 per shot.

Yup, I've done that each time I've bought a new scope. I know a few people who've bought laser boresights. You'd think they'd be great but nobody seems to be impressed by them.

Cheap junk. Instead of being straight the laser beam came out at such an angle it couldn't even get out of the barrel. Utter rubbish.
Maybe the expensive ones are OK but this cheap one certainly wasn't.

Normally it should be so rare (scope change) to need to completely set up they aren't really needed, looking through the bore works fine but is just slow.
And I started reloading anyway, cost per round dropped to about 50p per shot instead of £1.63!

Tracking back in a straight line is achieved at the back end by the back bag and shoulder pressure (semi free recoil on .308 is usual though it depends on the rifle design / weight) the U shape wont stop jump it just frees up both hands to control the rear end of the rifle. You should look at a "heavy sand" filled bag on the front rest you have made there IMO or even std sand.
Personally away from competitive BR shooting I like a harris Bipod and back bag. Its good to make your own stuff though

When at a range the benches are usually quite good. It doesn't have to be bang on level as long as it doesn't rock. No different to leaning on a tree branch or farm gate really

All these shooters.who would of guessed on a welding forum. I use a bipod for zeoring and nothing else. In the field bipod or quad sticks or anything that I can use as a rest
