RING ROLLER ADVICE

Can anyone give me an opinion on this ring roller, for hobby use only. Never had or used one but can think of lots of projects if I had one?

It looks like it’s made from timing belt idler pulleys and some beefy angle.

If you can find suitable pulleys at a scrap yard I think you could build that for £20.

To be honest, it looks pretty good for £60.

Surprising how mich it really costs to put one together yourself

Those are front wheel drive hub bearings, usually about £10-20 each

I am actually working on a type of Hossfeld bender currently. They can be made to form rings but are typically for simple bends. The little rusty thing next to the workmate could not have produced the rings in the advert. For reasons which will become obvious later, I am trying to make a scrolling jig to bend rebar. Bends are trivially easy, rings are quite easy, scrolls are a darned site more difficult to produce, well, more difficult for me to design a mechanism for.

It may be that a ring roller is the answer to scrolls but I don't know how the rough surface of rebar behaves on smooth rollers. I think they need to be formed over a radius, not bent into one.

Rebar would not be good for rollers.
The surface bumps mean the load is focused on them not spread over the surface area.

I would have thought oxy-fuel heat and a flat fixed bending jig would have been the way to go for what you describe... trying to do scrolls in rebar on any roller setup would be a pain!

Only you can tell. Simple mechanisms like this are surprisingly cheap while China continues to enjoy the protection of the UN terminal dues. But this home made thing looks robust and appears to work. The only issue I would have is there's no way of telling what the maximum capacity is until you exceed it.

If it looked like the ideal solution to my problem, I'd do a thumbnail costing for how much it might cost me to make and compare that to the price. :dunno:

Yes, that's my concern also so I am looking at building a very simple form tool. Hossfeld style benders can also incorporate forms for bending.

Why use scrolls? They have been done to death and back again.
How about free curves or rings?
Both are easier to make and allow more freedom of expression.

Nice work but when you need a scroll or a ring, that's what you've got to produce...

Not if you already have a ton of rebar sitting around, gently rusting into oblivion while you try to come up with a use for it!

I use hundreds of rings.
Home made ring maker.
Five sizes of tube to change size of ring. Cheap and quick. Also a great workout.
Slide the round bar under the top rail, stick the end in the nut, deep breath and wind it up.
