Roller bender

Hi guys going to make my own bench roller bender for sheet I've sourced some rollers for it just wondering on metal thickness for the sides only going to be bending 1.2mm thick sheet max and 300mm length will around 6mm be ok or is there going to be trouble with it long term use

I bought one of these 300mm slip rolls from RDG Tools when they were a lot cheaper, works well for it's size. I will measure the side plates later, they are quite chunky.

Cheers most seem like there real thick side plates assume its for the way it adjusts so you can get a decent sized thread so it don't strip them on applying pressure

I was looking at these listed at £140 on eBay just the other day and thought they're unlikely to be that good and to wait for a full size/standing pair to appear second hand - what thickness does it handle?

I doubt very much if they would do 2mm over the full length, 1.2mm probably will be difficult with 1.6 I would say.

I used them to make a lathe chuck guard.

I'd have just cut a little widened slot in the original guard. Nice work though.

But later I made another flap to cover the slot up, the idea being nothing would fall into it. I need to mod it gain soon and taper back the lower edge so the carriage can get closer.

The roller did it's job though, did wonder about putting a geared chain drive rather then the handle, but I don't do enough work with it.

From the RDG Tools website: "Minimum Roll diameter 30mm. 2.5mm Capacity. Will roll up to 2.5mm Mild Steel (2mm stainless)".

Note they make no mention of over what length it will roll that thickness! I rolled a 12" length of 0.8mm to 40mm dia with ease but a 6" length of 1.6mm stainless steel to 50mm dia was a bit of a fight and had to be done in small increments. I wouldn't like to try a full length of 2mm stainless. Also, opened up to 2.5mm the drive gears will have less mesh, not what you want for rolling thicker material over a longer length.

The only thing I would do is make the axle extend further than the bearings . To make it possible to fit different dies for round bar

It has a 3 HP motor driving the chuck, I have come close with stuff a few times so thought for a change I must apply a bit of safety

I have not used the rollers since, I must come up with some projects for them. But I do think they are good to have even if just sat around, bigger rollers taking up lots of space I would need to really justify keeping.
