I have a mk1 riley elf to restore and my days of crawling around on my knees are now done with so I am thinking of building a rotisserie.

I know the mini/riley shell is pretty light at less than 200kg but I would like to build it to hold say 500kg incase I decide to do something else later. ( a 105 series alfa but I cant spare a kidney)

What size box section would be appropriate? I have just looked at my engine crane at that seems to be 60mm square by 2.5mm wall, I dont want it to heavy as I will still have to break it down to store.

Any pictures of ones you have made or thoughts would be appreciated.

We used 60 x 60 by 2.5mm for both the Escorts, Ople's & anything else we hung on them like BMC, Alfa's etc.
We used to fit front suspension & axles as well so there was a fair bit of weight on them

That looks just the job thanks. Did you make the looking disk or buy it?

I thought about building my own . . . added up cost of materials, consumables, my time, the fact I wanted to work on the car, not the jig - and bought a deluxe one from Mk2 Mania - http://leonbirchall.co.uk/jigs-spits/index.html

Specified the orientation of the tabs for attaching to the car - and he duly delivered. Worked perfectly.

Another option
I should have got the ca higher in the hoops as the center of gravity is wrong but I ran out of jacking height.
They were trampoline hoops. Recon I could have got away with single hoop at each end but when I asked for estimate of weight it was guessed at as being a lot more.

Got mine from rolloverjigs.com
They tailor made the mounts to suit a jag xj6.
My jag is on there now. Only thing I was concerned about was the thread on the lifting bar so I changed it for an acme thread and suitable nuts.
Did feed the info back to them but haven't checked to see if they've changed their design.

I got one from ebay delivered today, articles really good thanks. Shame there was a dried bogie on the rear cover.

2 S/Hand engine stands off of the bay would make a good basis ?

I made mine out of what was lying about apart from two leadscrews and nuts from RS Components. These provide height adjustment. It's on casters.

Made this twenty years ago with steel I had laying around. Used some car hubs(Triumph I think) for the pivots. Occasionally have to nip up the bearings, but it has had whole unibody cars and complete chassis hanging on it with no issues. I just make adaptor brackets to fit the hub pcd for any new job.
