rust convertor on new steel

While doing my car resto project, i get very little time to work on the car.

Where I had made my own patch repairs with new steel, in my wisdom I could see surface rust appering, so I brushed on rust convertor the the new steel after welding thinking that it was a good base/preventive rust measure.

You can image my shock when I came weld on top new steel. I thought I better hit it with a wire wheel on the drill to get to the shiney metal.

The rust convertor That I put on came off like a skin that would easily peel off

I take it that rust convertors are no good on new steel.

Should I use somthing like por/ epoxy mastic straight on the steel then??

It depends, some have vinyl and other krap in them intended to form a barrier. Prob intended for people like my Dad in the 60s/70s when it was the working man's "smart repair". Chap on another forum decided to coat his entire car in the stuff, for some reason... He had to re-do the whole paint job.

Others are acids that actually remove the rust, or convert it. Like Jenolite.

Epoxy or other primer of choice would be far better. Seam sealer if needed.

I seem to recall that it needs the rust to adhere to but im of the opinion that there is only one cure for rust, disc cutter and bin. Restoration wise, im doing a Mk1 Escort and have been gradually rebuilding the shell for some time. By thinking ahead, i use a weld through primer on all surfaces that i may be subsequently welding to, i immediately wire brush all the welds to remove any impurities and as soon as practically possible get a coat of 2k etch on the panels once fitted. Bear in mind that most primers are porous so dont leave it where it can get wet and stay wet. once the shell is finished and dry fitted/mocked the entire shell will be blasted again and epoxy will be used.

i dont see the point in cutting sound metal away just because it has rust on it its far better to sandblast the whole shell 1st , that will expose any metal that is past its best and those parts cut out and welded up , any sound metal will remain rust free providing its coated as soon as its been blasted

Fair point and totally agree but i was generalising. Not everyone can afford to get their runabout blasted for a bit of rust on the bottom of a wing say. My point is, there is no cure for rust. it has to be completely removed.

ive not seen any converters that have proved to work for me

id say sandpaper , wire wheel scrub as much off and you can then a good primer and paint system will keep it nice

id choose a epoxy over por15 myself
