Rust in roof gutters

Hi there, i bought a mk1 golf gti a couple of years ago which had been repainted. Slowly rust has crept into the channels that run down either edge of the roof. It doesnt look like this area has had much paint on it to start with and now im worried that it might have started in the seam itself. Is there anyway of getting rid of it without having to remove the roof? What sort of techniques and materials would do the job?. Any advice appreciated, cheers.

I'd use a wire wheel to get the paint and most of the rust off in the gutter. then use a rust converter (phosphoric acid). you can brush this into the seam where the wheel can't get to. Then when happy to got the tion worm infestation under control. re-prime and paint.
It won't get rid of it completely, only fresh steel is gonna do that, but you'll be able to get a handle on it and stop it getting any worse

So its going to need the roof taking off then to sort it properly, what a nightmare.

Wire wheel it first. if the worst case senario is the replace the roof you ain't got nuthing to loose.

you may be able to cut out sections for replacement. Roof replacement is gonna be a nightmare and the rusty gutter would need to be really bad.

doesnt the acid thats gone into the seam leach out after painting and cause futher agro?

you rinse it out to remove any excess. not has a problem before



Phosphoric acid may be used as a "rust converter", by direct application to rusted iron, steel tools, or surfaces. The phosphoric acid converts reddish-brown iron(III) oxide (rust) to black ferric phosphate, FePO4.

"Rust converter" is sometimes a greenish liquid suitable for dipping (in the same sort of acid bath as is used for pickling metal), but it is more often formulated as a gel, commonly called naval jelly. It is sometimes sold under other names, such as "rust remover" or "rust killer". As a thick gel, it may be applied to sloping, vertical, or even overhead surfaces.

After treatment, the black ferric-phosphate coating can be scrubbed off, leaving a fresh metal surface. Multiple applications of phosphoric acid may be required to remove all rust. The black phosphate coating can also be left in place, where it will provide moderate further corrosion resistance. (Such protection is also provided by the superficially similar Parkerizing and blued electrochemical conversion coating processes.)

Ref: rusty commercial inside gutter in metal Bldg. Can see bottom of cutter from inside of metal building.

Replacement is out of question at this time. Roof Flashing has caused problem. Think I have Flashing fixed/stopped leaks although Flashing has not been replaced. (Pray for me!!)

So I would like to stop the rust corrosion that I can get to which is in the gutter. Maybe use the Naval Jelly. In the end want to coat gutter with Henry Product Roof leak repair 208 with fabric. How much of the Naval gel has to be removed after application. What "primer/paint" can be used to cover Naval Jelly area that can then be covered with the Henry Wet Patch tar. Henry Wet Patch needs to be compatible with Paint...or maybe Henry can go directly over the converted Ferric Phosphate FePO4.

What should I do if replacement of rusted gutter is not feasible.

It sure will continue rusting though slightly slowed down for a period.

Better bet use something like bilt and hammer hydrate 80 and soak it into seams and then paint over. Though as suggested remove as much as possible of the rust with a acid type system like Deox Gel. If you cover it in cling film while it's on it helps it not dry out so it can carry on working over many days. The warmer it is the faster it works.
