Rust proofing a chimnney spigot/hood

Mums having a bit of trouble with water coming down the chimney and into her fireplace. I'm gonna make a new spigote/hood for her but to keep the costs it gonna be mild steel.

I was wondering if there was any kind of (cheap) paint/metal treatment out there that I could use to prevent it rusting and also be able to withstand high temps without reacting?

Would some high temp hamerite stuff be sufficient?

Is the chimney being used as a flue or is it just acting as a vent ? If it is used don't make your own as it will not conform to any reg's and may be dangerous. With GAS at least it must be either a standard chimney pot (not a terracotta one with round holes they are only for ventilation) or a gas cowl. These cowls come in terracotta with slots (expensive) or aluminium (pretty cheap) the aluminium ones come in different sizes. If the chimney is not in use ignore this post.

never heard of anyone having such trouble with rain
if its an open fire does it have the facility to heat water if so could it have sprung a leak?

I sometimes get rain down my chimney, but it doesn't have an offset in it like most chimneys do.

No, a bit soot comes down but it stays in the stove.

Its an ex council house and used to have a coal fire. It was then converted to a back boiler with gas fire about 20 years ago. And just recently we've had a combi boiler fitted elsewhere and a 'hole in the wall' type gas fire fitted.

We've had a new chimney pot fitted (terracotta with slots type) but still get water in high winds.

The chimney is straight up, can see the chimney pot if you put your head in the fire and look up.

I have the drawing plan of the spigot/hood in the manual so will be to the same specs/dimensions.
