Rust warning

Having just been through storm bert in the emerald isle with the temp now at 14 dungarees here is a quick reminder to check your machines. My lathe was sweating like good thing when i went out to the workshop this morning. I hate rust.

Yep, same here. Cold few days followed by warm, wet westerlies = everything slimy.

This's why I have a dehumidifier & heater in the workshop. As long as I empty it every few days, I don't have to be worrying about condensation/moisture level.

I'd rather the electric bill than gear getting damaged.

I was using my lathe last weekend and forgot to cover it again. Checked today and it was soaking with a few rust patches appearing!

Dried off the bare metal bits, sprayed them with oil and refitted the cover.

I ran 2 dehumidifiers last winter and they worked really well. This year one is on loan and I can't find the other! I'm guessing someone 'borrowed it without asking.

I went into the garage to get something today and when I came out realised it was much colder in there that outside!
Shut to door quick, I'll have a check tomorrow and oil stuff.

just checked mine everything sopping wet .sprayed everything with wd 40 will go in tomorrow and blow the lot down with compressed air. wipe everything over then apply acf 50

Octopus are offering free electricity for two hours tomorrow morning (due to the excess wind I think) so I'll have the heater on in there full tilt tomorrow morning and be going round with some towels and some oil.

Remember a quick weather change last year like this that had the same result in moisture levels. Next years pre winter task will be fully insulating the garage.

Everything metal in mine is dripping wet.

Octopus are offering free electricity for two hours tomorrow morning (due to the excess wind I think) so I'll have the heater on in there full tilt tomorrow morning and be going round with some towels and some oil.

Remember a quick weather change last year like this that had the same result in moisture levels. Next years pre winter task will be fully insulating the garage.

Yeah that's the plan, fully insulate then I can dehumidify it and keep it at some level of heat to prevent moisture next winter.

At the moment I have a 3kw IR heater in there that I use when I'm in it, it'll be going on tomorrow morning to raise the temp a bit and try and dry out things.

I think keeping the temperature steady is more important than heating.

Only yesterday, while I was warming the workshop with my chinese diesel air heater, I increased my humidifier from one hour to two.

It’s now costing me a quid each week, while it is cold, but worth it staying dry, reasonably warm and rust-free.

It was about this time last year i went in too my garage and found the tools dampish, i realised the dehumidifier had packed up and promptly bought another, hate rust

Lathe and other machinery and tools, plus a couple of engines I am rebuilding covered in condensation, all under a lean to at the back of the house. Always a big problem here. The condensation also drips from the GRP roof. How great it would be to have a half decent workshop and garage

I doubt an IR heater will do much, they're designed to heat objects, not the air.

I've never bothered working out the cost. In my mind, it's a small price to pay for the benefit.
