Rust

Hello to all....I just bought my new welder..it's a Thermal arc 175...i tried many pieces of metal,just for test...it welds vry nice and arc is very stable..the only problem is some pieces that was full of rust made the starting of arc a dream i can't start on these metal who have rust...
Cleared a little the place where ground will be placed not given any results..
what must i do?
1)Different rods?
2)clear or oil whole metal?
3)something other??

ps:i am using E 6013 rods 3,2 mm

You need to get rid of the rust.

Arc welding will tolerate a certain amount of rust and muck on the surface but it's always best to clean to bare metal if at all possible.

Oiling it will only make matters worse

Use a Flap disk or grinder and go back to bear metal where your welding, if the rust is very thin almost like power then you should be OK to weld, if its really rusted like granules of sand then you will need to remove it.

Don't oil, or put anything on it, it will only contaminate the weld
