Sand blasting cabinets

I am looking at getting a sand blasting cabinet, Really i want something i can get a wheel in or cylinder head, I have a Wolf 3hp 14 cfm comp, Anything i should know, I am seeing ceramic nozzles, filters , soda....confused.com

Certainly if you are doing wheels, that compressor is going to work hard. Also consider some form of positive dust extraction. I use a Henry vac with a water trap between it and the cabinet.

if u get a cabinet use a pressure pot rather than a suction gun otherwise u will get nowhere with it. a second compressor is a big help if u mean business

I have seen pressure pots..now i am thinking getting a pot so i can blast even bigger things out doors like car body bits..

You think there is something missing? The picture from inside shows it has angled sides in the base so i pressumed it needed to go an a stand?

just from looking at the picture I think that is potentially just making it flat bottomed to sit on a bench, Looking at the internal picture the wire shelf is just below the glove holes and in the third picture you can see the angles where the bottom slopes down towards the middle. looks to be a repair or modification towards the bottom

I would think you could do a 16 inch and probably 18 inch rim in there although it is slow work and you will need extraction and it wouldn't be easy to move it around

don't underestimate the noise a compressor, hoover and blasting makes, especially if you are thinking of doing this in a domestic environment as you will want the garage door open and neighbors may not be as excited about your new toy as you are

I have a direct drive 14cfm compressor and it works pretty much full time

I also looked at all the media and ended up buying grit from machinemart just to get going as it saved the delivery charge. it seems to work reasonably on rusty steel

Wouldn't it have had a 'cone-shaped' bottom to catch the medium for recycling etc?

Yes i think it may have been modified and or messed with, I think i will take a bit more time and see what else i can get, The pressure pot does look better and the guy next door has just said i should stop being so lazy and make my own cabinet, He works as a fabricator/welder so i need to send him to work with a shopping list of parts ....

there simpe enough to make out of thin sheet steel and one inch x1/8 angle or whatever u can scrounge just need a welder and some pop rivets to knock one up

Wheels can be hard graft especially rusty Landrover rims. If you want to do it efficiently then sadly that compressor won't cut it and you'll kill it pretty quick as it will run continously. You really cannot have too much air available. My cabinet has a pressure pot and when ran it with a 15CFM and a similar petrol one in tandem and they still ran 100%. I now run a 130CFM road compressor. I a 47kg gas cylinder as a reservoir by the cabinet and the road compressor will fill from empty to 100psi in about 10 seconds!

For a bit of tinkering if you have time on your hands then you can get away with less but it's very tedious and you will soon be of the opinion that it's easier to get someone to do it for you.

I was given some nice sheets of galv steel and some 1" box section so i have a fair bit to mess with and i have a spare henry hoover...well its a hetty some same thing but it's pink which does'nt bother me as it will match my going out welding gloves

Has anyone used Walnut shell media?
I am thinking of building a small cabinet and blast tank and keeping it just for walnut shell.
It will be for motor internals, brass and copper contacts and the odd bearings and components that will not tolerate either aggressive blasting of the possibility of any abrasive particles remaining.

I believe they also use it for cleaning out car engine internals, like manifolds and cylinder ports etc.

Yes its not anywhere as quick as 'standard' blasting methods but does the least damage, with the major benefit of any media left within a component like a oilway or bearing will breakdown into relatively harmless residue as opposed to turning the lubricant into a grinding paste.

Good morning WorkshopChris.
I have used walnut husk, primarily for blasting off antifoul paint off vessel bottoms, it does the least amount of damage to the vessel hull, you still need to be careful. For what you are doing I would use 'plastic' abrasive. It is fine chips of plastic and works very well. I use the plastic for blasting airless paint gear prior to strip down. It will remove any overspray and or cured paint, both internally and externally. I am using military spec, which means it's a little harder. It will not damage any hard metal, alli it will roughen the surface. The plastic is very sharp which is why it works so well. I also use it at reduced pressure, about 85psi. The supplier of the plastic abrasive is the guy I do the airless paint sprayers for and he was the one who suggested it in the first place. The plastic is more expensive than the walut and I recycle the plastic.
