Sand blasting for a newbi

Hello everyone, ive decided that i could do with a sand blaster, ive got some rust to clean off a land rover chassis and am always cleaning metal so one would come in very useful but ive got a few questions due to the fact im new to it, ive been looking at this sand blaster http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/p...0pressurised-sandblaster?da=1&TC=RV-000510130 i dont think i will have a problem with air supply as i have two large compressors plumbed together to give a good air output and ive read all about not useing sand in it but to use "JBlast standard" from http://www.hodgeclemco.co.uk/viewpage.php?pageid=28 as its only 5 minuits away from where i live. What do you think to this set up? and it says on the sandblaster you can control the output of sand (even thought im not using sand) because i dont want it to just ruin the chassis. And does anyone have any recommendations as to what else i would need or a better sandblaster. sorry for all the questions i just want to be in the know first before i spend any money, thank you for any advice Rob.

I've got one of those you're welcome to come and have a look at. Have a look on Ebay, you might find the 20 gallon version which is a better bet.

If you use the 2.5-3mm nozzle you'll need J-Blast Supafine, the standard grade will block the nozzle.

Ah thanks for that i would have just got the standard and spent all day wondering why it wasen't working, would the superfine do as good a job at getting the rust off do you think? ive seen the 20 gallon one on ebay, but after a few times of buying cheaper tools of ebay i prefer buying expensive things like this from a shop where if something goes wrong i can take it back to them, and i intend to buy it tomorrow because i need to do the work for the end of the week so haven't got time for postage.

They're exactly the same as the ones on Ebay, I got both mine from there (2 different suppliers).

You should have gone to MM today, it's been a VAT free day. Next one is on the 25th April.

Superfine will do the job OK, in some ways it is better because it will get into the pits easier. I use it all the time, several times over in fact!

using standard up to 1.5mm doesnt get the job done any quicker over a given aeria. the larger particles are more wide spread than the finer media leaving gaps in betwen so u have to go over the same aeria twice .finer media covers the whole aeria with no gaps so therefore more eficient

No, I can't remember, there are few selling them and it was a few years ago.

A used one went for over £300 would you believe!

Here's a short video i made of me using a 10 gallon one. I tried it with 2 comps running about 14cfm each and it was still a slow job with the 3mm nozzle, running about 80/90psi.

Thanks for the video, really interesting, i got my sand blaster today and some supafine Jblast, connected it all up, but cant use the small nozzle because it keeps blocking, can use the next one up but it seems to spray everywhere. I read the guide on this website for advice and then sived the grit, but didnt seem to make much difference. Will have to see how it works tomorrow. Cheers Rob

are u regulating it properly . providing its dry and sieved it should be ok .u only need a small amount of media regulated through. 90 percent air 10 percent grit otherwise it just fills the blast hose and blocks up in the jet

Yeah, you may running too rich. The main valve, bypass valve and nozzle valve should be fully open and use the bottom valve to adjust the mixture. This adjustment is VERY sensitive and takes about 10 seconds to settle down between adjustments.

AHH that could make sense, i have had all four valves fully open, now ive been told this i will play around with the valve tomorrow to see if i can get it right, glad i joined this forum now otherwise i would be stuck deep without a clue.

Start with the bottom valve closed and with air running through the system open it a couple of degrees at a time.
