Sand / Vapour Blasting.

Just wondering I have seen these Sand Blasting guns from around £10 and also ones where they just got a hose on the bottom.

Now I only work on small items tinkering around with the Bikes. I have a set of crank cases I need to get the original powder coating off and get clean before I paint. I have been trying the paint stripper and also wire brush but not getting any where fast....

Are these small sand blasters any good for small items? Can you just put normal sand in them or has it got to be something special? Guessing a 3hp compressor is man enough for the job?

Looking for a cheep solution without taking them to someone else.

Failing that Anyone in South Wales on here got there own setup, could pop down with a few Beer Tokens

You won't shift powder coating with a siphon gun.

You shouldn't use sand, it's dangerous and illegal. Use J-Blast Supa-fine or crushed glass.

They're OK for small items, useless for big ones.

3HP should be fine on small items because you tend to blast in stops & starts so the compressor has chance to catch up.

Also be very careful to remove EVERY trace of blasting media from engine casings, miss any and the engine will be scrap within a few miles after the rebuild !

ive done a few few casings and engines that have the original satin black coating on them it can be removed easlly enough but only with a pressure pot at about 80 psi i wouldnt use supafine or anything simlar as it would pitt the ally.beadblastings not abrasive enough u need something in between if u have a high pressure washer and its only a few casings get a sandblaster atachment and u can use kiln dried sand that will work ok

True enough, but J-Blast is suitable for other work. Recycle your used grit and when it's worn down (after 3 or 4 uses) it's OK for ally.

Think I will give it a miss then, may just find someone local to Vapour blast them.

How is sand Dangerous and Illegal? Just seems a little nuts as that is the term used " Sand Blasting"

It can cause silicosis and is banned in all but a couple of instances. They used sand before the threat to health was realised, the proper name these days is grit blasting.

Ahh right, I never knew sorry. Glad I asked and not just gone out, bought a gun and went hay ho about the day.

Hoping to find someone local in South Wales that can do some Vapour Blasting for me cheep.

Also wondering for the cost is it worth me getting my own little setup, do grit & vapour setups use the same gun?

Guessing I would need a propper Cabinet & Gun.
