Yep, utterly terrifying! You see I actually found what happened that time - the Bench grinder had been mounted on a length of H beam which was larger than the base of the machine. This created a pinch point between the wheel and the machine where work could get caught on the H beam and then would have no option but to be sucked through.
Grinders have guards to not only protect you touching them but to minimise the effects of a wheel exploding, which I am told is similar to a shotgun at point blank range. The Union has very rigid guards which gives me great confidence, plus some glass guards which bend down over the wheel so you’re pretty much completely shielded.
That’s not really the fault of the grinder is it.
