nothing much u can do ac u have allready cleaned it out as long as its in sound condition it will be ok. generaly the only place they rust is at the bottom . if your concerned turn it over and tap along the bottom with a hammer. if it dents easily its thin if it doesnt it will be fine

Thanks for that, i'm confident it is sound, just hoped there was something I could treat it with before I replaced the fittings. Wouldn't you think they would be galvanized or lined inside from new??.

just rolled and welded . dont spray anything in as a rust retardant it will stink u out when u are using it

Phosphoric acid would be the best solution for that situation, would it not? Swill some of that around inside and then flush out with water, after a suitable period of time. That should treat any rust and remove anything which isn't metal. I wouldn't personally recommend any form of coating or suchlike though, as they always tend to be bad for trapping moisture if they have the slightest chip in the surface.
I have an old receiver here which needs similar attention. A vertical receiver in generally sound condition, but with rust flakes in the bottom due to not being drained, (before I got it, might I add).

How big is the receiver, btw? Small enough to move around, or a big'un? Just remembered one other thing that leaves a decent coating where water may be encountered, and definitely shouldn't leave any unpleasant smell. Strong tea. Make a shedload of the stuff up using the cheapest tea bags you can find and fill the receiver to the brim, then leave it in there a day or two before draining.
The stationary engine blokes use the tea method for the water hoppers. The tannin? in tea apparently works wonders for preserving them internally.
