Screw compressor - tell me more!

Hi. I have to buy a 100 cfm compressor for a work project. I am going to go used as money is tight.

What brands should I avoid and what should I be looking for.

All the screw compressors on sites I have been on have generally been very reliable and we have one on site that is 25 years old and 70k hours.

What is everyones experience?

The 40hp is cheaper than the 30.........

No experience of their screw type but the piston ones are very good.

Quieter, I feel they last longer but I assume more expensive to fix.
You have to look at electricity cost first as some are much cheaper to run then others

We run a couple of big ingersoll rand’s ware I work and up to now with only regular servicing they have never let us down. Mostly running 24/7, but they get Christmas off.

I've worked on systems with a couple of HPC screw compressors.
They seemed to be reliable running 8-10 hours a day.

If you can fins a machine that has vfd incorporated within the control system the savings can soon add up.
One customer has halved is electric consumption since the new compressor reduced speed/load when no air demand, compared to the old one that just dumped air to run off load.
I haven't looked but at one time The Carbon Trust were offering interest free credit funding for new compressors with this tech fitted, might be worth a search.

@vwmark - get any second hand machine checked out properly by someone that really knows about them. Service history is an absolute must have. There are lots of cheap second hand screw compressors out there that turn out to be anything but cheap in the long run.

Its at a dealer. Serviced and 6 months warrenty.

How many Bodg dealers and what country of manufacture?
Ingersoll stock most stuff in Belgium with next day delivery. Plenty of independent dealers too, HPC are also good
The bigger Ingersolls are a Hybrid DC motor and the speed automatically adjusts to the load saves a fortune, you really need to look at this in reverse, Leccy cost first

^^^ +1 for Compressorman. I have bought a compressor and refrigerant dryer off him in the past. Good, honest advice from somebody who knows his trade and stands by the machines he sells - new or secondhand

Is that electric? That will be a big old motor in that. My road compressor is 130CFM and it has a 1600cc Diesel

Probably around 18/20 kw i would expect. The old electric meter will be spinning.

I just looked at one - yes 18kw!

I would recommend HPC compressors. We have a few now at work, never give any trouble. The smaller ones have built in dryers.
I put a 30 kw, 130 cfm fixed speed in last month, It was to take the place of a Ingersol Rand variable speed that was playing up, again!
