Screw Type Electrode Holders

My little welder came with a spring loaded clamp to hold the electrode, which i quickly discovered was'nt ideal. All the other stick welders i have seen have had the screw type holder, finally got one today from a local welding shop, what a difference it makes

I've had my wee SIP 140a for a good few years now, it still has the original spring load electrode holder, can't say I have noticed any probs with this, the only benefit I can possibly see comparing one with the other is, poor electrical contact with spring holder compared to screw type holder.

Curious to know how switching from to other made a difference in your case?

well for a start, bending the electrode down in the origional holder was next to impossible as the end just slipped, also the grip of the new holder is chunkier, seemed to help a bit with my steadyness

Spring type usually has two positions when inserting rods, tho at times, not always best position for task in hand. Fair comment on chunkier with screw type, best to use what gets you the best result!

I find the lever of the spring loaded clamps gets in the way - much prefer the screw type. Better for bashing slag off as well!!!

Decent ones arnt to bad to use. The big one i have on my little oil cooled setup is bloody hard to operate and grips the rods pretty tight.

I do prefer smaller screw ones though
