My work provided surface pro is locked down to the point it’s almost useless

The USB port only works with “approved stuff”

I use my own DSLR to take pics, to have pics on the surface pro I need to download on my own laptop then transfer using wetransfer

This works but is a right palaver

Is there a device that I can plug the SD card into and then wirelessly transfer files?

Does such a thing exist ?

Yes, well sort of, You can get SD cards that have inbuilt wireless. I use one on my CNC lathe so that I can send G code files from my desktop to the CNC control.

Here it is but you only see the USB adapter as the SD Card is inside, it is a Toshiba Flashair.

That looks interesting, but reading around it suggests I will need an app on the surface pro, heron begins the problem as I cannot install any software

Nope, I just connect to it via my wifi on my router.
It has been a while but I had to set up the config file on the flashair to be part of my network and now I can access it from my desktop via the wireless part of the router and transfer files to it or grab files from it.

Basically I can grab files from it or send files to it via my network. My desktop connects to my network via a wired connection and the Flashair connects to it via wifi. I can also access the network wirelessly from my laptops so I can also access the flashair from the laptop.

What about using a shared folder like OneDrive or similar to (slightly) reduce the palaver?

I have the surface pro4 which takes the micro sd card. If your camera has full size SD, then if you buy a micro card they come with an adaptor. Pop it in there and put in the camera.

I am making the assumption that the surface pro you have does indeed have a micro SD slot of course. They may well have removed this useful feature in later models

First one is the FlashAir on the lathe. Then the Chiron Mill, the Beaver NC5 mill, my Plasma and lastly my workshop PC. If I have the laptop switched on it would also show and I can access any "computer" from any other computer.

Get a cable that allows you to connect the card reader to your phone, upload pics to your phone then upload them to an online folder - cloud, onedrive, google drive.

How about discussing the problem with your line manager? If the problem of uploading files to your works computer is impacting your ability to do your job, then it's the company's problem.

My BT Home Hub router has a built in USB port. I can plug a stick and watch films off it, look at photos etc.

This on any device that can access the network.

@Parm , presumably your IT bods have configured it with a BitLocker Drive Encryption set up?

If they haven't you could run a Live USB stick (Linux distro). If they have you would have to circumvent that and they might get upset.

There is a gadget that may be what your looking for . I got one given years ago and it is quite good. It has a USB slot , an SD card slot , a network cable socket and is wifi . So, you can back up files from sd to USB , view or transfer files from one to the other including tablet or laptop by wifi by using software you download for free. Here is the introduction:

How much are flashair cards. Searches produce prices over 200 quid.
