sealey 150 amp welder question :S

Hi guys, i have got my self a new welder, a sealey supermig 150, compared to the sealey 130 i had been using its welds superb!
I have a bit of touble with 1.2mm bodywork with blowing through but that is to be expected,

the problem i have is with thicker steel, when the welder is on full power the wire feed doesnt seem to be quick enough, its seems to penatrate good and the weld looks superb but i dont get the bacon sizzling sound i did with the smaller welder?
Dont know if its just because the welder is more powerfull?
it makes the sound like on a smaller welder when you got two much power and not enough wire and it burns the wire back before it gets a chance to lay.

Doesnt seem to be causing any problems as the weld lays nicely but just doesnt sound right

What diameter wire are you using?

0.6mm wire

this was an axle stand, 3mm mild steel tube in the middle, the original stand was about 2mm
slotted the tube inside the original stand for added strength
cleaned up the metal so it was shiny and gave the edges a slight chamfer (spelling) to penertrade better
seemed to weld quite nicely

Thinking about it now, maybe i should be using 0.8 wire for this thick stuff?

Two things............
1...great looking welds so don't get all hung up about the fact that it sounds different and 2...yes, 0.8mm wire might be better, it will mean you can slow down the feed speed a bit and could handle slightly thicker stuff.
I expect your machine was pretty much in spray transfer running it flat out on 0.6mm wire which is why it was a hiss and not a sizzle.

just do some reading about short circuit transfer and spray transfer and all will be explained

In laymans terms it means the wire is sort of vapourised and sprayed into the weld pool rather than dipped into it as it is when the machine is in dip or short-circuit transfer.
The in-between stage is known as globular transfer where the wire balls up then the ball drops into the weld pool.

John follow this link and download the user guide (about 1meg pdf doc). It's not your welder but page 9 onwards gives a good guide to the types of transfer with pics!
Note if you read the rest of the guide be aware that the machine has a very odd wirefeed selection and also takls about gasless aswell (as the machine does both)
