Sealey hydraulic pump rebuild...help

Got myself a cheap as chips sealey hydraulic pump. It's the 10 ton model....I'm planning to use it for a bench press project...hopefully.

I doubled down on the £16 purchase price by shelling out on a seal kit at £15. The question I have is...does anyone know of a set of rebuild instructions?

Regarding the pump...I would usually just take it apart and then change all the seals but it's a second hand pump so I'm not sure I want to trust that nothing has been messed with. The seller said "it might need bleeding" which I interpreted as "might need a complete rebuild with all new seals"....could be wrong....maybe they are meant to be covered in oil on the outside...just worried someone might have already had a go at fixing it when I get it opened so prefer some Sealey instructions or even a diagram?

Well after wasting an hour searching the web I finally ended up at the Sealey page...and they have a parts diagram for their current pump which I'm hoping is similar....why didn't I start where I ended up!

Pulled it all apart...only to find out that I bought the wrong seals. On the up side I found a bag of spare seals in the box of bits that came with the pump. The line at the bottom is the spare seals I found...it looks like a lot of the rubber seals have gone hard so will be replacing all the rubber seals and "o" rings.

I suspect that the large oil reservoir seal was the leak point. I decided to apply some instant gasket to the seal to hopefully stop it leaking.

The reservoir was almost completely empty so suspect all the oil just leaked away...also found evidence of bright red hydraulic oil. I suspect "someone" filled the pump with either brake fluid or ATF fluid at some point which could be a reason that the seals have failed....or could just be old age.

Either way I will replace the fluid with hydraulic jack oil just to be safe.

The good news is I managed to get the pump connected up to the hydraulic ram and it's actually working....won't know for sure that everything is OK until I use it in anger but so far the signs are positive that I bagged a bargain.

Ok...the even better news is I've managed to get the second ram that came with the pump working. So now I have enough bits to have 1 ram for the body straightener and 1 ram for my project bench press. I'll post some pics of the bench press when I get some time to build it....I warn you now it will be cobbled together using bits and bobs from the garage.

The second ram was non functional...took it apart but couldn't see any problems...then I thought better try the hydraulic coupler! Turns out the coupler was busted...swapped in a good coupler and it all started working. So I've thrown caution to the wind and thrown in another £5 on a new hydraulic coupler.

So far I'm in for £35 but seems I have now got a fully working body straighter and a spare ram too...pretty happy man I can tell you.

Heres the first test... All worked perfectly. I also tried out the hydraulic spreaders and they also work well.

That was a bargain! ATF is basically fancy hydraulic oil so it shouldn't have damaged the seals, brake fluid on the other hand ????

Dunno what it was but the box of bits was covered in oil which has leaked out of the reservoir. I have a feeling it was the main reservoir seal...the one I stuck the gasket stuff on.

Yea...I couldn't believe when I got it....it took 2 of us to load the box into the car there was so much stuff...must have been over 50Kg! I've basically got a heap of frame straightening bits....wish I had this when I did my MR2 chassis!

Think some seals are even sensitive to ATF...dunno if Sealey pumps are affected but definitely if you add ATF to a P2 Volvo V70 power steering you'll risk toasting the rack seals. I think they use some special green stuff in volvos...luckily I had a 5l can of jack oil in my tool cupboard so didn't even have to pay for the oil. Shame I jumped the gun on ordering those extra seals...otherwise the whole lot would have cost £16

Not all ATF is the same, some does nasty things to brass and bronze components.

Add a pressure gauge to your press, you'll need a 700 bar one.
It will help you see whether what your pressing is moving or if you get to the pump maximum load.

Why not make yourself a wooden or metal box with dedicated padded compartments to put the set in & protect it especially if your'e going to add an easily broken presure gauge that sticks out the side of things .

Jeep Cherokee doesn't like normal ATF in the PAS, blows the seals, need some green stuff from a Jeep dealer that's about £12 a litre, sounds similar to the Volvo mentioned above

Yea volvo use the same green stuff....think it's called CHF11....except because it's Volvo they think it's OK to charge £17 a litre for it which is nuts. Using ATF on a P2 Volvo is a recipe for a rather large repair bill. Best of all I think there was a mistake or misprint in one of their manuals somewhere which people interpreted as meaning ATF was OK....the rack is a pain to replace too as the front sub frame has to be lowered which isn't usually a problem on other cars but the V70 is a big old beast.

On the box front...the frame straightener came as a kit in a metal box I just didn't have a pic of everything...it did literally take 2 of us to just about manage to carry it so probably more like 70kg I reckon. Agree on the pressure gauge being delicate....I may have to come up with a way to protect it....or perhaps only mount it in the bench press once the press has been made up so it's better protected.

Good point though....still trying to find a descent gauge at a descent price. The best one I've seen so far comes with a free pump attached to it for £60...think I'm probably going to hold out until I get a cheaper one turning up.

I quite fancy picking one of these up as I am thinking of building a bike lift and don't fancy using a car jack. Is the rate of lift acceptable on these if using it for a bike lift?

Hi Exuptoy, seems "OK"...its quite slow going. When I'm down the garage next I will do a count of handle pumps vs ram height when it's under load.

TBH I think the cylinder would only need to extend say 6-8 inches to give full lift.

Replacement air over hydraulic Sealey pump and cylinder on EBay for their bike lift £45 delivered.

I thought the air pump was quite expensive...£200+...might have gotten that wrong....£45 seems like a bargain to me.

I had a look at the ram side of things...there was definitely some oil on the ram today and I'm pretty sure I cleaned it well before sticking it in the box. So I'm now wondering whether the ram also needs looking at. I guess it makes sense that the seals might also have been damaged in the ram end by whatever hydraulic fluid was used. I may put the ram under a little load and leave it a couple of hours to see what happens and whether the seals weep fluid.
