self cleaning rods

I used these paticular rods a few years back and all i remember about them was after the weld,maybe 10-20 seconds the slag used to ping off on its own and revealing a nice shiny looking weld below...i would like some more so my question is "what would they be"?? and are they ok for mild steel as i remember thats what i was welding back then with them.

They'll probably be stainless. So not ideal for mild steel, and a bit pricey.

Stainless rods do it. Weld it, go outside, shut the door and come back in a few minutes

Iron powders do it ...........well peel rather than ping

To be honest a lot do it especially if the plate is cold

Pinging slag

Al,your spot on, the plate thickness has a lot to do with this also the arc gap,a steady hand,corect amps etc. you can pick up E6013 electrodes from most makers and produce welds were the slag peals off.
Normaly if the slag pings then its to do with expansion and contraction diferencials and that is normaly a stainless type. Years ago a lot of maintance welding was done with 299/680 types and they were used on most types of steels including mild steel and boy did the slag ping off them.

Technic al wasnt sure what iron powders just had to ask me pops (ex shipbuilder)..Apperently they are banned now because of the fumes and that..

No theyre not

The fumes are no worse than any other mild steel and a lot less toxic than stainless and others

having said that welding fume wont do you any good

They're not banned, I've got through a couple've boxes in the last two days. Iron powders do smoke though, we had some 700mm x 5mm Hyundia rods that quickly filled the workshop so you couldn't see from one end to the other! Currently using Esab 33.80 something or other... Blooming good rods

Rubbish.

When you get it really right it doesn't just look like a scorpion's tail, when you get close to it it tries to sting you. Honest.
