Sequence advice please...

Can anyone advise on the correct sequence for protecting a joint/weld please?

Is it ...seam sealer - etch primer - stonechip (if needed) - then paint

or is it ...etch primer - seam sealer - stonechip (if needed) - then paint

I was taught the latter but I have seem posts on here showing the former. I would have thought it better to get some etch primer over the whole metal surface then cover with seam sealer.

Thoughts appreciated.

it would be etch first as it has the better adhesion then seam sealer i would then wait for it to cure and use a standard primer then stonechip (if needed) and then paint

Etch always goes to the metal because it chemically reacts with it.
