I've been tinkering mainly in wood for the last few weeks, making a Toylander and preparing for some DIY tables and kitchen units.
One thing wood and metal work have in common is the need to have sharp tools, I have a bench grinder, a Tormek water cooled grinding wheel with loads of jigs, a flat plate of glass for honing plus I thought I would combine it with a home for my 3 small angle grinders and the abranet sanding stuff, plus possibly emery paper and emery roll.
This is definitely a prototype, I have a cheap Sealey 3 draw mid cab on its way, this will be the home to jigs and tools waiting to be sharpened plus the honing plate will sit on top with a protective cover. There will be room behind it for bottles of oil, honing fluid, past etc. I will have a bracket either side for the two bench grinders, set a slightly different heights as the Tormek is better slightly lower, plus this will run at 90 degrees to the conventional bench grinder as you need to get to both sides of the wheel.
I haven't worked the underneath bits out fully yet but one end will be rollers for emery cloths and possibly home to grinding disk, the other will have some kind of steel pockets for the grinders and the middle bit may become a cupboard or pigeon holes etc.
Here's the design as its stands, work in progress
And progress so far, I started about 11:30 and had to break off at 3pm, and had about an hour for lunch so about two and half hours work so far, I haven't welded for a few weeks and it shows, however it got better once I changed the settings from the last job I did which was a snow plough blade
The extended lunch was caused by the bench drill chuck falling off its arbor, so I put the chuck in the oven on 160c (140 fan ) until tender then put it back on, worked a treat.
I'm not that happy with the welds, I gave the steel a proper clean with the grinder. This was one of my better welds, some were appalling. I checked all the usual, gas flow etc. and it didn't seem to click today. I shall get a few bit on the bench and get it right before finishing this off, most of it is just tacked at the moment.
Cheers
Andy
