shed for compressors

Im about to move my workshop to my home and have the sort of neighbours that will potentially complain about noise.

Im looking for some ideas for a sound insulated compressor shed/housing that will allow compressors to work without building up heat within the structure and then overheat.

The workshop im building will be insulated to help with noise within the workshop, but I want the compressors in a separate place so I can paint in the workshop.

I can obviously build a small shed like building just big enough to house the compressors and insulate it with for example, acoustic roll again to keep the noise down.

I don't want the compressors to overheat in a small space so keeping the door open makes the insulation ive put in useless although I assume acoustic roll isn't good at keeping heat in?

Any pointers please?

Yes, I have just done the same job

I used carpet underlay and it deadens the noise by at least 50 %

It works fantastic and does not build up heat

make one of the walls double thick... the inner wall doesn't reach the top, then put a fan at the bottom on the outer wall.... a bit like a big upside down U bend (do the same thing at the other side but upside down to let the air in... cold air in at the bottom hot air out at the top)

and sound insulate all the surfaces

you can wire the fan in to the compressor motor power so it runs when the compressor does, or wire in a thermostat?

I have the fan running all the time, it removes heat even when the compressor isn't running.

I was going to insulate the shed but after building it, it being behind the garage, turned out that having the two 14CFM compressors behind the garage was enough. I can now run my compressors on a Sunday morning and no one really hears much even without any insulation.

I managed to get a deal on eBay for a powerful inline extractor. I think it does over 100 l/min. It pumps cool air into the shed and the air then exits via the doors and various gaps which I left for this purpose.

The pulley on the compressors acts as a fan so I laid the compressors so that the pulley is right by the door so it can extract air through the door which has loose cladding. On hot days I open the shed doors.

The inline extractor is connected to some ducting so that the air is directed over the compressor pumps.

Works great.

Just extend it. Put a hose tail in the drain plug port and a length of hose terminated in a ball valve outside.

I think you will be surprised. I was very surprised.

Below is my house. The red mark is where the compressor used to be, in the car port (a roofed area without walls). It was terrible, the noise travelled to all the houses, I could only use it daytime. I moved the compressor to the green position. Now I can happily run the compressor at night. No sound insulation needed.

Just make it so that any noise is at a comfortable, muted level, (unless you'll be running it in the wee hours), as a common courtesy, and stop pandering to the neighbour.

That's really good if its working - I can get the compressors between 2 garages so they will have mass between them and the neighbours, so you may well be correct in that a shed will suffice.

If you are in close proximity of other houses it may be an idea to look at the hydrovane or screw compressors.
