Sherman Digitec 200 TIG welder fault - Have you had the same problem?

Have you had a similar issue? I just started to use a Sherman Digitec 200 TIG welder which cost £726 minus the import duty. It coped with MMA when I used it for the first time (2 years after purchase) but today six months later, when using it for the first time to TIG weld it refused to work. The selection dial, buttons and lights are not functioning as expected and also they will respond errarttically. It has been carefully stored but is 6 months out of warranty. Have you had a similar problem with this type of machine? Have you managed to repair or replace components? Bear in mind it is not easy trying to operate settings whilst trying to film at the same time. Hope you can help.

Perhaps take the cover off and see if anything looks untoward. Is that the torch it came with?

Id do as above, but also seek someone who is familiar with tig machines and their use to have a look with you. On my machine, different make, but similar some things dont light up unless you have other things selected.

In a dry workshop packaged in its box and polystyrene for first 2 years or after that on its side on a shelf wrapped in a foam carpet underlay for 6 months. Away from moisture and not dropped. Same as my other electrical gear.

Correct torch and the supplier sent the pedal a few weeks after as they forgot to send it and ran out of stock.

Thanks. It still does not run with cables unplugged. LED lights flicker all over the place randomly as if something has a bad solder. I know of a technician who builds and repairs modern boards for coms industry. He is used to looking for toasted caps etc under high magnification. I will wait to hear from supplier and manufacturer before opening the box. Then machine dosen't have any scuffs, scratches marks on it, even the feet.

Did the test in MMA mode work correctly, with adequate welding power for the Current setting chosen? If so, the fault in TIG mode seems to be a failure in the control board or front panel, rather than the more common inverter power switching transistors. The intermittent flickering LEDs suggest it could be just a poorly-seated inter-board cable harness plug.

I think it worked OK, but I remember I struggled a bit with dialing back the power on the Sherman. It seemed too damn hot. So used a cheap arc welder at work instead which was ideal. I was going to test the MMA on the Sherman today to upside down weld some square tube on to some RSJs but thought I would go get the buzz box from work. They are robust, easy to control and you can chuck them about the yard without fear of carrying them back with bits of plastic missing. I will get the buzz box and compare them. THANKS
