Shortening an Al-Ko Indespension Axle

I managed to aquire this:

An Al-Ko caravan chassis that I can cannibalize to mount my bandsaw mill on but the distance between the wheels is 1500mm which is way too wide, I need about 1000mm at most.
Now when I built my general purpose trailer I modified the axle off of an old car recovery Spectacle trailer and I shortened that with no problems by cutting 300mm out of the middle and welding it back up but that was a square section Indespension axle, this axle is a weird inverted teardrop shape.
Has anyone chopped a section out of the middle of one of these?

As above, I would prefer to use internal sleeve, then weld, dress up. and invisible joint,

Any idea how far in the rubbers go, on the axle I modified I could see the plug welds for the plates inside but I can't see anything on this axle although I need to clean some of the rust off.

Yes its the 850kg axle according to the plate, cheers for that.

Any pics of your bandsaw mill? Heres mine I made last year, been using her today on a cherry which had decided to no longer flower so came down the other week. still need to improve the lifting mechanism and add some guarding, but she works ok. I made it mainly to resaw a bunch of large timbers I've been given, but since then it's done an 18" x 8ft Ash Log and now this 15" x 5ft cherry.

Looks good but after the blade on my saw jumped off the wheel (it was stationary) and sliced open the bridge of my nose it makes me cringe seeing yours with no guard!
Here is mine, the last pic has a 16" x 10' Sycamore butt on the bed.
