Should I also have a dust type mask?

I do a lot of woodworking and am very concious about dust. As I have never welded before I am not very clued up on lung protection for mig welding.

Any pointers as to whether this is required would be most helpful

Most people don't bother but there's certainly no harm in it if you can fit one under the mask ok.

There is some nasty stuff in welding fume. You should make use of respiratory protection and/or fume extract. 3M do some good quality masks, they can be found on ebay cheaper than industrial suppliers.

I have some 3M 4251 respirators due next week. They are superb masks and will be ideal for your requirements. They have had a slight price increase from the last time, but still excellent value and I haven't seen cheaper. Brand new unopened original packs. £10 posted UK mainland.

Mmm... not entirely correct. Also the OP wanted to protect himself from MIG fumes. That would be some efficient extraction system to take that away before he inhaled...would you say?

Have a read below...yes these are the masks I have for £10 posted. These masks will protect you against dust particles AND organic vapour/fumes. I spray 2K with these, and you cannot smell or taste a thing. Put goggles on, disposable suit and gloves and you're pretty well safe.

Get the right mask, end of.. dont think a dust filter will do for welding etc, Filters are designed for specific tasks and that depends on the size of the fumes as a molecule when airborne , the filter will block the bad stuff and allow clean air in.

Extraction is only good to "reduce" fumes that are not harmful in small quantities for all other things the right mask is the way to go.

If you are using these masks to spray 2K that contains isocyanates you will not be safe. The fact that you cannot smell or taste a thing means very little; 3M do not manufacture any non air-fed respirators for use during spraying of isocyanate containing coatings.
