hi guys im trying to make a set of shove holer (post hold diggers) out of two
spades do you think it would be possible for me to weld a cross over
on the two spades to join them so they open like a pair of scissors
?
The ones I have used in the past havent been like normal spades, they are longer and have a curve, it makes digging the hole a millions times easier, might be worth heating up the spades and bending them and grinding a round edge to them...
as for the welding im sure it will be easy enough to do, just make sure you get them the right way round, lol.
Bought mine off ebay for a tenner brand new, and that included a dyking spade - long thin thing. Not the most heavy construction but I've put a fair few posts in round the farm and they've not broken yet. Not worth making one at that price imo.
when I was a kid I had to use a Post driver, If i knew bits of kit like that existed I probably wouldnt have a bad back... The only positive from not having that kit was watching Freddy Croston Dropping said post driver on his head...
here is a picture of my two shovel head what would i have to do to theam to make theam open when i pull the handels apart and close when i shut theam i just carnt work it out lol!!!
hi thanks for advice guys i will upload a new picture tmo
i have flattend the shaft then run a bold threw the middle to give a scissor affect i just need something for handles now i was thinking of making them out of wood at first but i now they wont be strong enought so i am thinking of using the tubing off harris building fencing sloting it over the top of the shaft part then welding a ring round i will upload the finshed product when i get it done lol thanks for your advise chris i so the type you are on about today when i was in B&Q the only folt is i wont the type that opens when you spread the handles and close when you shut them the ones you have from B&Q work the other way
cheers

Do keep us updated. This sounds like one of those projects that seem easy and cheap then take umpteen hours to make and fall to pieces triggering the ''I Will Not Be Beaten'' syndrome. I have never ever fell prey to this syndrome myself. ahem.
lmao chunk i think thats the way it was going i have brayed the thick circle shaft part flat so i can cross them over which in doing so i have spilt the metal but with abit of weld on should be ok i picked up some tubing today free of charge and the spades only cost 8 quid for two so if it doesent work out no big loss but it seems to be cuming along great i now have the two heads crossed and joined just waiting on weld wire to cum so i can weld on the metal tube handles proof will be in the pudding as they say lol i will get pics on soon
cheers
hello again guys well today i have finshed my shove holer project and im please to say its been a success im very pleased with the outcome and there strong and working great
you just loosen the ground with a spit or long spade then remove the soil with the shove holers or just use the shove holers to dig the hole if the ground is soft unlike awers which is solid clay!!! check out pics not best welder i seem to get alot of splatter and not very good weld pool but outcome not so bad
The Galvanised coating on the Heras fencing tube won't be helping the weld quality. You should've ground it back to bare steel first, but weld doesn't look too bad to me. If they've held together after a few uses then no problem.
