Silent compressor oil

A mate of mine has just got himself a cheap silent compressor & being a tight git thinks the correct oil for it is too expensive,he asked me if normal veg or sunflower cooking oil would be a good alternative with it being thin.I have no idea so said i would ask you guys on here

Veg oil is the LAST thing to use. I tried it in some fridge pumps and it gummed them up.

I also tried normal 10/40 engine oil and that took ages for the pump to start. I'm afraid he's stuck with the proper stuff.
