Silly Qustion time for those who know.....

Hello,

Im in need of help with my paint spraying.
I don't know what % of thinners to mix with the black enamel paint im using and there is no guidance on the tin.
There seems to be plenty of air coming through the nozel but the paint comes out intermitently.
The spray gun is not blocked.

Does anybody experience this or just me?

This is my project.

I sprayed the red oxide and the paint seemed to flow easier but can't remember how much thinners i put in.

All I know is when I did the same it turned into trial and error to eventually get it spraying, from memory though it was probably at least 50/50 and maybe even 60% thinners.

That could be it, I'll try and see what happens with a second coat.
As soon as i get another belt for me compressor cos it broke today.....grrr.

Enamel is usually 10-15% thinners. What thinners are you using? It's different to cellulose thinners, you need the correct thinners.

Thick paint usually just comes out weak and slow, not splutters. I think there's an issue, check your vent hole on the lid as this is classic symptom.

We always used to heat synthetic enamels to thin them out but you could use 10% thinners.
Worth doing the drip test to get the viscosity right though. Oh and spluttering is normally a problem with the needle packing washer.

The gun was clear as i clean it with white spirit and make sure there is no blockage.
Paint does come out of the small vent hole in the top of the paint gun.
Drip test?

Drip test = Viscosity test, the amount of time a given volume of liquid flows through a set hole.

As above but simplified. I mix the paint, dip the stirrer in the pot by a couple of inches and count as I lift it out. It will run off the stick in a constant flow then drip. If the viscosity is correct it will go to drip at 2.5 seconds.
