sip tn3 150

hello to you all .
I have a sip tn3 150 compressor that is not working , the only sign of life is when switched on
a small pop and puff of smoke comes from the motor housing and the house rcb is tripped .
no longer under warranty and Sip seem not to care , advising on a bigger compressor .
any ideas greatly taken cheers .

You say the RCB trips, do you mean the RCD (earth trip) or MCB (overload)?

It looks like the motor may be duff, but try turning it by hand (unplugged) just to make sure it's all free.

I was making things short , when switched on the compressor is in the outhouse plugged into a single socket which is connected to the rcd in the house .
does not blow the fuse in the plug and only trips the socket section of the rcd .
the motor rotates freely by hand .

If it's the RCD then you're looking at a short to earth in the motor, which suggests a burnt winding to me.

Does the motor look as though it's trying to turn before the RCD trips?

not a twitch , I'm surprised to see that new Sip compressors come with a two year guarantee which is telling me they have had troubles .
but there you go that's life

You could have a look inside the capacitor box on top of the motor for signs of burning, it's a long shot but a capacitor may have got hot and melted a path to earth.

its as clean as new no signs of blown holes on capacitors ,no burnt smells , the only different colours are the spade connectors on wires from the run capacitor connected to the reset button on the capacitor box

Try measuring the resistance between the various connections in the capacitor box and the case of the motor. They should be open circuit.
