my sister got given some rm home work to make something out of what they had lying around.

she asked if she could make something in shop.

ended up making hammer on lathe out of bits in mbul box.

she did whole thing herself with me watching over shoulder.
shes 14 by way.
handle is supposed to look like thors.

this is something in looking forward to when my son is in school, all the arts and crafts stuff through primary school and hopefully can find a school for him that still takes an interest in metal work/wood work when he hits high school. All quite a way off yet though, got his second birthday to sort first lol

BB she as taken rm as option like me, teacher as told her he is expecting big things of her but dont think he will be thinking this big.
our school still as lathes etc but struggle to get enough people to take course.
thorny our teacher as suggested to head seeing if other schools pupils could join us.

Just finding a school which isn't run and taught by complete ********* these days seems to be the main battle. What classes they offer is way down the list of relative stuff. You can always teach your young 'uns stuff like that yourself.

Mine is 2 and a half, can't wait till he can come play in garage. I've got the original Honda g150 engine from my old go kart to make him one. I may go a step further and make a tot rod.

Was really lucky at school as they offered an Engineering GCSE, did CAD, turning, milling, laser cutting, designing and printing PCB's amongst other things. Really gave me a good start and I loved it.

I bought a printed circuit etching kit when I was about 11 or 12, i ruined the dining room carpet with ferric chloride. Mum was not chuffed, ironically I was making a rain detector/alarm to tell my mum when it was raining so she could bring the washing in.

my father was in that situation like you, I was given a bit of homework when I was in the last year of primary so about 10 years old. it was to paint something I sw around the house. my father was well into his spraying and airbrushing business at that point, back log of jobs etc so he showed me how to spray base coat, then how to mask off and spray the basic shapes and then add some shading. granted some of the time he was guiding my hand and did have to rub some of it back and blow it in again for me. I took a sheet of Perspex into school with the Yamaha racing colours on it and a small cartoon figure of a rider standing on a podium (because at the time I had a signed poster of that years Yamaha team). teacher called me a liar and said my father had obviously bought it for me...it took 40 mins for my father to stop shouting at him and threatening to pull his head off for demoralising a small child who did nothing but complete his homework. he then brought out a portfolio of all his work including, cars, vans, bikes, helmets, leather jackets, pictures and so on. the teacher didn't know where to look and promptly took 8 weeks off on the sick with stress. when he came back he was given a year 3 class to teach.

My lad was asked to make a CD shelf.
I make very fine bespoke CD shelves.
He did the design. cutting, bending and brazing of the frames, the cutting sanding and finishing of the wood.

my brother has just left the high school I went to, and at the end of the school year they have a ceremony where they all get achievement awards and other made up nonsense that means nothing really. anyway, I went along and was stopped by my old RE teacher. I had popped in just to see him get his awards and then planned on slipping out again so was in work gear covered in plaster and paint as I was halfway through a job. teacher looked me up and down, grinned and said 'well, I see you have made something out of your life, working as a labourer are you?'. I paused for a moment, reached into my pocket and handed him a business card, told him if he was prepared to speak to me like a human and not like the teenager's that he assumes he is better than, then I would have a chat, but until then he can carry on preaching about religion while I get on with running a business. he couldn't think of a reply so I walked away. im not one to start shouting that the teachers are crap and the reason kids fail, but he really was rubbish

Wow, that is lucky, my school has lathes, a mill, brazing hearth and plenty more good stuff but they only offer a RM course (since last year they closed product design, graphics, DT) so it never gets used (I may have, err, "liberated" some end mills). We do get to use scroll saws, disc sanders and a laser cutter, hooray. And to make it worse, we started with a ***** teacher then he left (mid project, I might add) and we got another crap teacher who skipped all the coursework so we're about a year behind then he left coz he didn't like how the school was run and now we have 2 technicians teaching us who are absolutely brilliant but the principal, in her almighty wisdom, sees fit that we get a real teacher again.
I would love to have done an engineering GCSE (I didn't know such a thing existed) but now I'm looking at (for next year) either an engineering apprenticeship or A level maths and physics and then engineering at uni.

My school had a great DT building, all new the year I joined the school, but I never really had a chance to use the machine tools room. I managed to do a bit of brazing in my DT project, but not much. Crying shame - same with the IT Dept, rubbish machines and not much direction. Wish I'd tried harder at school, rather than let myself fail. Ironic really, that 10+ years on I run my own IT business, and regularly fabricate stuff on my own in the garage. Still a good grounding in drawing things out hasn't left me, just need to progress to some CAD now
