Site welding safety

been site welding cleats to columns for the last few days, wondering what other site welders do about preventing other people on site from arceye. i have used my welding screens at low level where possible but these would be a nightmare if there was a breeze or stronger. when i weld above 2m the screens are no use.
how close would someone need to be to get arc eye?

I think you have to be fairly close, the trouble is it likes fireworks...people love watching, the other problem is the compen claim culture we now have, amazing how people see something and start to think how a claim could be made.

I remember receiving a print out of a similar case in Ross on Wye about 5 years ago, a guy put something into his eyes to make them red and sore...pepper?..sand?...got a claim in and won £2700, his downfall was boasting about it in the pub, right next to a person who was involved in the investigation

Screened off where possible, if its not practicle, its tough. Shouldn't be that close to you anyway.

lots of safety sign's and cordon off area make sure its in your risk assessment and method statment

We've worked on sites where no ones bothered, and others where they dont even want the arc to be visible. I've had lads welding with the curtain draped over them.

Some fool asked for us to put screens up to stop people inside an office 100 yards away getting arc eye. Through the glass ffs.

I was on esso4 petrochem and we got told we needed to cover the arc so the tanker drivers 150m away didnt keep getting arc eye!? :/

On the site is it compulsary to wear safety specs? they will stop arc eye, and unless someones stood next to you watching i doubt theyll get enough radiation to get a nice 'sun tan' on their face...
