Smart and Brown Model L series 25

I aquired a Model L for parts as some are a direct fit on my Model M
Inc spindle threads and collets.

Its in good shape and can't face selling it in bits so made some room and squeezed it in the garage.

Not sure on the model
A 25b had the counter shaft as mine does but the speed plate matches the high speed c which had a 2 speed motor and direct drive from motor to pulleys.

Its In reasonable shape
Badly painted in the past so il be stripping it all off.
Nowhere near as daunting as the M

Noticed the spindle oil point is packed with grease and has taper/thrust bearing arangment at the spindle rear.

Came with a nice bundle of accessories too.
5" 3jaw and 6"4jaw both bernaurd and a unknown 6" 3 jaw with no backplate. Jaws may fit a 6" 3jaw.i have already with a backplate
Measures look good but need to test

Catchplate and a full compliment of collets and drawbar.

Shouldnt be as long a project as the last.

capstan collected yesteday and in good condition. Doubt il need to strip over than to facilitate painting.
Il give internals a quicl clean and lube at the same time.

The lever cross slide was an unexpected bonus. Asked while I was collecting and Chris poked around in a few boxes and pulled out all the components to build one up.
Some damage to the front edge. A candidate for belzona repair I think.
Will need some work to get everything working as intended but a bargain for a score. Spare gear and bushes too.

And how it should look.

Wiped out with flu this week so havent made any progress.
Gonna try and make a start today.
Thankfully its all in good shape so shouldnt take long to work through it.

Finished sorting the garage out first so I have room to move.

Rebuilt crossslide quickly to see whats what.

Gear I used was marked runout and feels a bit notchy. The other gear was the one in place and needs attention with a file on a few teeth and hitting with the mig where the keyway burst through the shoulder. Il file and test first before touching with mig, if no better il use whats in in and assume its normal. Never used a slide on a raxk before.

Assembled in the wrong order and couldnt get a full size key in. Second bushing needs fitting after the cog and shaft.

Rear stop is fine but forward stop appears to have been bored and tapped for a larger thread. Nothing in my box fits so il get the gauges out another time before sourcing.
Thankfully managed to find all other fixings in my box.

Thankfully this is the only part in bad shape but for what I paid for the slide its worth the effort.

Dont expect to see shiny polished metal.
Havent got time to sit around polishing my knobs.

Clean rust free and reasonable paint job is my limit.
Be covered on oil and swarf soon enough.

Cross slide and compound in bits.
Decided to go all the way as I found grease mixed with swarf.
Handle pins came out whole too.
Handle in the final pic isnt original. Doesnt want to shift. Think someone fitted it with a big hammer.
Il give it some heat later and try again.

One of the locks for the compound swivel was awol. Relieved to find the foot inside and looks like the braze holding the stud gave up.
Have a spare bolt ready to mod.

Cross slide still has the handle attached and is in good nick other than a couple of marks near the top. No backlash from the nut.

The compound screw I didnt pay any attention to. Just put it in the box.

You made me look at the pic closer and had to go and check.
Cleaned it up and voila. Not a lot of wear mind lol.
Hows that even possible.
Will give bracehand a call tomorrow and see if a spare is availible.

It does in the image. Right above its an unshaded bulb thats causing the effect There that bright I cant take pictures of the garage. Just whites out near the ceiling.

Possible on the fall. Especially if the top way was extended past the bottom casting. The bolt to fix it to the bed is bent too so would give credence.
Have a lever crossslide in progress so not the end of the world. Better suited to the capstan too.
Fingers crossed I can grab a replacment if not il see about getting one made.

Il give them a try first. Was there friday and hes got huge amounts of S&B gear kicking around mostly used.
Retiring soon so its all going.
If he has one it wont break the bank.
If not best see if I've got the changewheels required to cut.

In the meantime il straighen as much as possible ffor the sake of reassembly

Pretty peaved about the screw.
All back together now except for gib screws and its in really good shape. No real wear. Even without the gib screws theres minimal movement.
Still a little cleaning to do but will be taking apart again for paint.

Order up my paint this week and keep chipping away. Il try and strip the tailstock this week too.

Flu last week and a throat infection this week and barely ventured in the garage.
Popped out this afternoon and cleaned and refitted the gib screws. Tacked a new stud on the compound mounting foot and its all ready for a new screw. (Havent called yet)

Stripped the tailstock too.
Didnt notice the broken casting previously. Il clean the break up and paint. Isnt going to effect use.
Other than that its not in bad shape.
Il strip the paint later.

Didnt really pay much attention to lathe condition as I bought for accessories.

Ready for the angle drill and wire wheel.

Headstock fell off while I was out there.

Lots of similarities to its big bro.

Bearings lh headstock.

bushings chuck side.
Look identical to the M

Nicely ground spindle.

4 large holes are for the spindle lock.
4 medium holes secure the pulley center to the headstock.
4 small holes pull an external plate against the bearings through clearance holes in the headstock and tighten into the pulley center.

center supported on bearings inside the pulley and fixed to the headstock. Center does not rotate.

Outer pulley fixed to the spindle via internal and external keyways.

Bed headstock and lid stripped.
Insides have been cleaned but wont be stripping and repainting.
Might give it a rub and prime. Undecided.

Next job.
Electrics, Motor and counter shaft out
Doors off and get it stripped.

Nice to see its still got its original c spanner for the tapered bushings.

Learnt lessons from last time around.
Once the base is painted I can clean and refit as I go rather than having half finished parts all over the place damaging paintwork.

Not looking forward to getting the motor out.
