Hi, I'm currently building a pair of car ramps. I've Arc welded the majority of it but I'm Mig welding the tyre treads on. I've got the machine set to maximum but occasionally and now getting more regular the wire feed is slowing right down. It is fine when it is not welding, the wire comes out smooth and constant but when I start the arc it slows right down to such an extent that I'm getting black sooty welds and the occasional blob of metal will fall somewhere near where I want it to go.

For wire slowing down when you start welding it could be the contact tip is heating up and gripping the wire causing it to slow down. A new contact tip might fix the problem or if it's already new try an oversized one to rule that out (ie try an 0.8mm contact tip for 0.6mm wire).
That wouldn't explain the soot which is normally a sign of gas flow issues. Worth posting a picture if none of that is any use.

Cheers for that, I'll get some 0.8 tips in and give it a go. I was thinking it could be the the volt drop on arc initiation dropping power to the transformer for the motor. It doesn't happen every time and sometimes if I let go of the trigger and press it again it welds fine.
