I took a metal shop in high school (20+ yrs ago) and learned about welding (oxy-acetylene). I liked it more than woodshop, plus I was pretty good at it. I haven't done any welding since then but just recently (a year ago) decided to try arc welding as a hobby (cheaper than MIG). Now I've decided to go ahead and move up to MIG welding. Come to think of it, I should've started with MIG and skipped arc, but I think it's still a good thing to have learned arc welding.
