After a failed attempt where a friend messed up a little I had a go myself to make some chisel handles
Chisels are old Marples I picked up from a car boot sale
Handles are Titanium bar I picked up from a place where they made hip joints
What an episode it’s been today. I’m no lathe expert but I have learnt that titanium is bloody hard and not easy to cut on my 5” raglan lathe
HSS was just destroyed in seconds, so after a quick call to Dad (he had a milling turning shop until he retired) I brazed up some carbide bits to see me 1/2” bar and ground down a tool, was still a night mare to cut and needed plenty of suds
Next up drilling my the holes, again not easy, killed a few drill bits but also learned how to sharpen
Quick go with a knurling tool, this was the easiest step
Ground down the chisel shanks to round and then put in the freezer, heated up the handles and then bashed them on with a copper hammer
Allow to cool and there’s no way they are coming apart again
Ground back the edge profile and sharpened up on my water stone wheel
I should have spent more time smoothing the chisel blades but still happy with the result
