sound proof box

going to build a sound proof box for me compressor i am on a bit of a budget so what can i use as sound proofing??

can i use loft inslashon??

Try to buy a "rag bag" from a charity shop - stuff they can't sell. I get them as cleaning rags, but should be OK for soundproofing.

I think 'proper' sound-deadening panels are made from a much denser material than loft insulation but it'd be better than a poke in the eye with a sharpened piece of whittle...

You'd have to be careful that fibrous material didn't find its way into the pump.

I have been considering something along these lines myself; the drone of two compressors, running in tandem, can get a little intrusive!

How about trying something like this.

Just enclosing the compressors should reduce noise significantly. Adding a layer of this to the inside of the box should help reduce resonance inside the box, also.

Don't forget that if you are fully enclosing the compressor, you will need to add some ventilation. Ideally, I would add a cooling fan to create some airflow, also.

Loft insulation makes quite good sound deadening material. Especially when sandwiched between two hard surfaces, say MDF board.

What are you going to do to admit air to the enclosure though? The compressor will still need a decent air flow over the motor and pump to keep it from overheating.

soundproofing a compressor requires multiple skins and also enough airflow to cool things down. To stop the noise from escaping out of the vents you need to introdudce turns in the route that the air will travel, soundwaves only tavel in straight lines and cant go around corners but do bounce of hard surfaces so you will also need a dense material for the box

my dad got me some 10mm and 7mm thick perspex sheet 3foot x 3foot and i was going to build a box in a box like the pic abive on a pallet
and i have some small low volt fans to help air flow

if you build each wall of each box double skinned and fill with loft insulation you should get good results

According to the man at work who used to do the noise analysis for a well-known compressor manufacturer in High Wycombe, he reckons egg trays stuck to the inside of a box, the sort you got loads of eggs on, about 30 is the best- like these…..

Alternatively, you can use that expanding foam fill stuff and carve it into shape.
Although you may be lucky and find some packaging suppliers who this sort of stuff. The real McCoy is pricey though.

The biggest reduction you'll get is if you pipe the air intake to the pump to the outside of your workshop. It's where most of the noise comes from.

Go to your local carpet shop and ask for some offcuts of the high pile carpet. They usually throw away quite some carpet if a staircase is done. Carpet works very well.

Dont forget a box has 6 sides, the floor & roof are just as important.
Dont bolt compresor down, mount on pnumatic tyres (you can lock/chock wheels to stop movement)

The most important parts to sound proof are the inlet and exhaust channels. With these it even helps to add baffles.
