Source of cheap 50-100l receivers?

Hi folks.

looking to pick up a few small receivers (I.e. tanks from cheap compressors) in the 50-100 litre range.

Of course, I can scour eBay to pick up broken compressors and dismantle them: but there must be an easier way.

In the past I’ve seen people who obviously do warranty returns for cheap makes who sold “as new” tanks on eBay for very little. (£25-£50) and who had multiple ones. This would be ideal as they all then match and I could have them delivered.

only I can’t find any at the moment: any links?

when you can buy complete brand new compressors for less than £100, you’d think you could get the bare tank for a fraction of that but they don’t seem to be available as spare parts. Things labelled as purpose made “receivers” cost hundreds.

They’re to act as my air storage for my new compressor system (base mounted compressor with no integrated tank and hard copper lines with manifolds). Looking for around 200L in total.

Will be mounting them against the wall above the rafters around the workshop as I don’t have floor space for a tank.

the HGV solution sounds very interesting. Just had a very quick Google and found a few steel tanks at 60l for £60ea.

Thanks guys - yes the LPG tank option is there, but wasn't sure about drainage - so assumed they wouldn't be the best way forward, unless I'm missing something obvious? For example, mounting them upside down. Assumed they'd be less than ideal in search of long term, dry air - but happy to be corrected.

On the HGV tank route, it looks like it could be a very neat solution - nice shape and form factor fits well with the install, would drain from one of the centre holes and could be wall mounted with the saddle brackets that are available. They're around up to 120L, but the most common 'large' size seems to be 60 litres, which is available for as little as £55 - cheaper to buy multiple at this size than the larger ones and they're powder coated internally too, which is nice. Two or three of them would look very neat along the roofline of the workshop. HGV unit running pressure is usually about 110psi ish as far as I know.

I’ve an adapter for airing up trailers when I’m working on them and they just run on workshop pressure

So you'd imagine test pressure will be quite a bit more, and running them at say 150psi would be OK.

Just had a bit of feedback from the manufacturers and they’re typically rated to 12.5 bar, some are higher.

how does that compare to a standard compressor receiver (don’t have one handy to check the tank)? I think 12.5bar is 181psi.

Think mine puts out 150ish so yeah ample, they'll be tested at 1.5x that anyway surely

I think its 14.5psi in a bar roughly. I think volvo dump trucks used to run about 10 bar and they had similar tanks to hgv tanks, quite often would charge higher when the charge valves failed and it went to main relief instead.

Most compressors seem to have the cut out set by the manufacturer at 10 bar (140psi) or below.

Not being picky but there's a difference between rated use and test pressure. Just because its been tested to 1.5 times the rated pressure doesn't mean its safe to operate at that pressure all the time.

No of course, but if its rated at 140, tested at 210 and run at 150 it will most likely be fine

sorry, i should have written exactly what the manufacturer said. The referred to 12.5 bar as the working pressure, not the rated/tested pressure.

They are 24 litre tanks.

Prompted by being given a broken compressor, 50 litre tank that sounds OK, diagnosed by tapping with a hammer.

You can mount them upside down and drainage is not an issue. You can either put water traps inline with tank output to catch what condenses or you can pull "dry" air using a bit of plumbing like in this sketch.
