Space heater gas usage???

Hi its freezing in my shed (after been told i have to remove my wood burner) so looking at getting a space heater with a 47kg gas bottle, but i'm concerned it will drink the gas and i will be forever buying bottles.

How many hrs roughly would you get out of a 47kg propane bottle running a Clarke Little Devil 2

Remember the fumes are bad and it will put out loads of moisture!
Who made you remove the woodburner?
I think you will get about 60hrs running.

were i live in hull is a smoke free zone and it was environmental health got a complaint so they sent a jobsworth out unannounced who started threatening taking me to court she was quite abrupt and because i did not want any agro i removed it i had already been reported for building my shed but the council came out and measured it to the size of the garden and distance from the house and said your fine, i think some one may have it in for me????

I literally just set up my smaller even littler devil. It runs off a 0.3bar (280mbar) regulator so uses less than 1kg per hour. I think yours will use just over 1kg/hr

I run mine off 15Kg bottles which last years because I only use them for say 30 - 45 minutes at a time or it gets a bit stuffy (and I have more than one bottle!)

I would detail how I now have all of my bottles set up with quick change PCL connectors but I wonder if the mods would have a fit...

had the same agro reported me to council for rocket stove but stove is smokeless uses clean burn technology i think mine was council planning though

but was advised they would be intouch with enviromental health and they havent been near

dont forget rocket stoves are enviro friendly to a degree they conserve wood usage
are smoke free if you use clean wood ( not at start up every wood stove produces smoke at start up )

gas bottles create water and tools have been known to be full of damp after usage

Hope you get sorted, there's little worse than trying to work in the shed when you begin to lose feeling in your extremities [behave, you lot ] - ask how I know.......
And, it's potentially dangerous, depending on what you're trying to do......

Yes I think you are right too. I have studied legislation (I live in a smoke free zone) and it describes exactly what is meant by "smoke" detailing black/grey etc. But the best bet is not to let environmental services anywhere near your shed. Proper jobsworths imho and they would have a hissy fit if they saw the merest suggestion of oil spill or bits of pallet wood on the bonfire. I think some people would be surprised what the penalties are for polluting soil for example and the power that environmental services have if they get their hands on you is something you don't ever want to discover first hand.

thats why im thinking of a space heater surely no one can complain then maybe next it will noise, were i use to live was brilliant, neighbours all got along great like a little community.

tell you though when i was using the wood burner it was great, super hot in fact too hot and i was getting a pallet load of clean wood from a pallet place i use to just give the forklift driver £5 for his dinner and he was happy.

just hope that these space heaters are not too expensive to run as i have been quoted £68 for a 47kg propane bottle.

im not using anything with a flue or anything were neighbours can see out of the back windows i am also rearranging the shed layout because i use to cut my lengths of steel out of the door im trying to rearrange were i can cut a full length on the back was, basically so when im in the shed and the doors are shut no one can see anything i think this is the best way.

screwdriver what you will find is most areas are a smoke free zone however in some areas its really enforced london happens to be one of them

also note theres 2 rules wood stoves in houses and wood stoves in sheds

powderblast you should have had a chimney flue that was seen planning never mind enviro would have had you with that as you not at the required height to expell the fumes

i like wood stoves myself but i hate dirty wood stoves there awful to breath in and stink like hell
i have a rocket stove built myself and its clean it has a sweet smell to it not acrid or the type that make you cough

my neighbour has a dirty one burns anything and everything in it and its wet wood at that stinks to high heaven also black grey smoke pours from it i have the video after reporting me for my stove i decided to get proof who burns dirty me or him with video as proof

No I dodged that bullet. I got dobbed in to planning and an enforcement officer was coming around so I removed and hid anything wood burner related. They have swathing powers and the fines can be breathtaking also, it's virtually impossible to defend the indefensible. Anything which can be said to be "polluting" can be held up and said to be a wicked crime against humanity especially if they go all scientific on your ass. It looks bad, sounds bad and in a way I suppose it is bad. But frankly, that's what happens whenever you convert energy.

But by the same token, you can make the case that sugar is both toxic and poisonous. Anything (and to some extent everything) you eat can cause cancer so if someone focuses on an issue they can easily make a mountain out of a molehill.

What gets me is that yes, burning wood releases CO2. What's the alternative? Let it rot? It still produces the exact same amount of CO2. Recycle it? Same thing goes, if you expend energy, you create pollution. Make me laugh with all these battery driven, "non-polluting", "zero-emission" vehicles. They dump their emissions and pollution at the power station of course and the efficiency when you have to convert that power into any number of different formats before it even drives a wheel, well, frankly it makes a coal fired steam engine look positively environmentally friendly...

The space heaters are great for quickly warming up the space but do put out quite a bit of moisture so not ideal.

Electric is the perfect form of heating. Not at our current prices though! It is about 4x the price of mains gas or oil.

I'm considering a used oil fired boiler and then having rads in garage and workshop. I'd buy heating oil in 205 ltr drums so "pre paid" unlike electric when you can get frightening bills at a later date.

1kw/hr is about 14p so about 25p/hr to run the 1.8kw electric heater.

Divide the kw by 17 and that gives you kg/hour (not exact but pretty close) works on propane

It would be interesting to work out the most efficient and cost effective method for keeping a shed above freezing or ideally, warm. I reckon it is a time dependent calculation. if you're only going to spend 2-3 hours in there then "space heaters" might be just the ticket. But they only heat air and hot air escapes the instant the door is opened and you have to sit on the ceiling to enjoy it.

I suspect mass storage heaters are more economical for the longer duration, say 4-5 hours or more. Mass storage could be anything from water filled radiators, dirt bank rocket stoves or even phase change tanks of wax. we all know how long it takes to warm up a shed from ice cold so it makes sense to have a system where the chill stays off all winter, then you top it up when you're working in there.

I gave up a couple of days ago because I literally couldn't touch some of the tooling kept in drawers.

I would invest in insulation and draft proofing , in smaller spaces that are well insulated body heat and a few machines running are enough to get a place warm. The nippers bike shed/workshop is a fridge body and that needs very little heating.
