Speaker repairs

Bit cold for project Carlton at the moment so Im trying to get the "workshop" sorted a bit, want to get some decent sounds in place and I have this nice pair of B&O speakers but the foams degraded on the cones, looks like I can get new foams but what sort of glue do you use? anyone ever done this? do I need much patience?

its always been replace the speaker itself by putting in new speakers

but if you want to do so

I've done this before on a pair of Bose 301's with the same problem.

You'll have to remove the dust cap and carefully shim the coil around the magnet so the gap remains the same around the circumference, i used a sheet of plain paper, folded up to give the thickness required

As for the glue there seems to be much snake oil stuff going on, i just used contact adhesive, but you only get one shot so a second pair of hands is useful

If you can get replacement foams then its well worth doing

I think they are an odd size but they are also good quality apart from the foam so I would like to keep them

Then I bottled out and took them to Wembley Loudspeaker Co in West London. Excellent job. These were for a set of bass and mid drivers for a pair of SD Acoustics SD1. Can’t get drop in replacement speakers for them.

Then I bottled out and took them to Wembley Loudspeaker Co in West London. Excellent job. These were for a set of bass and mid drivers for a pair of SD Acoustics SD1. Can’t get drop in replacement speakers for them.

I too bottled out and sent a pair of 30 year old Spendor speakers back to England in a visiting friends van. I had to wait another 6 months to have another mug friend bring them back. There was someone willing to do them in Nantes but the quote was stupendously large. I had a cone begin to delaminate on a lowish price Audax speaker and used a brush on adhesive of the sort used for PVC gutter and sanitary pipework, it worked a treat and still works.

My old speakers went to a place in Pinner to be re-foamed. From what I was told Bostick wood glue was their glue of choice.

I've a pair of Boston Acoustics speakers that were my father's. I bought the foam and adhesive to repair them when I was in Seattle in 2018. I really must get a Round Tuit.

I have used Wembley before to repair some blown Spendor BC1 bass/mid units and they are working fine still.

I might have to call them too. I have a pair of old school alpines that some rodent decided to sharpen its teeth on the copper wires on the cone. No idea if they’re repairable but I’d love it if they were.

I wasn't even aware you could get replacement foams for speakers so useful to know

The foam is critical to the design so make sure what you get is as close as possible to the original otherwise you will affect the power handling and potentially the frequency response

If your drivers are scarce (and that doesn’t mean Lowther expensive, just rare), then a professional re-foam is well worth it. The stuff I have isn’t super expensive, but you just can’t find it lying around any more.

I've done it, but only on spendy subs that also needed a new coil, when getting a bit carried away

I used glue supplied with them, smelt like contact adhesive
