Speckle/fleck/pebbledash effects

Could someone in the know possibly advise how this effect is created?Is it an effect or are there special paints that actually do this?The reason for the question is I am restoring an old jukebox that had it from new(circa 1950s).I can get something similar by spraying a panet then flicking paint from cut down brushes but its a bit messy and too easy to make it look crap.Have included some wxamples.

I've seen it done with a special tool. Sort of a square funnel shaped box with a rotating brush in the bottom (think bottle brush but slightly shorter bristles). The brush is turned by a crank handle outside the box and there's an adjustable bar inside that the brush rubs against to flick the bristles. Adjusting the bar and the rate at which you turn the handle plus the viscosity of the small amount of paint you put in there gives different textures whilst pointing the open end of the funnel at the work piece gives some semblance of control over where the paint goes.

Seen something near identical but bigger used to apply a texture with concrete render too.

No idea what the tool might be called though.

Yep they do, quite a good range too, was looking at them today in B&Q, not sure if there is exactly what's required but worth a look.

It needs a basecoat colour though - I used it once without reading properly and its just the fleck that comes out, it wont look like the cap!

Thanks guys.I had seen the plastikote but theyre all the wrong colour.Plus a bit too textured(of course they would be as theyre stone effect).I can't see a jukebox manufacturer(Bal Ami in this case)doing the fleck finish manually,they made them by the tens of thousands.I think they must have had a small scale version of the first reply or more likely specially formulated spray paint.

Fine mesh net curtain bat,put it against the intened area about a mm away,then spray the paint through the net curtains taking care to move the bat around.

You'd have to do a test piece first.

I'm sure its a case of the air gun spattering ie the air supply is very low and causes spatter of the paint?

Good idea mate and worth a try.Have to make sure its not a lace pattern like they use on Fast & Loud!

You don't want a continuous spray of the paint,just a quick burst then move the bat to an uncoverd area then another quick burst and so on and so on,then a change of paint colour if doing it two or three colours?

I remember seeing some toilet walls being sprayed with just the finish you are after, Must have been about 40 years ago, I remember the painter saying it was non miscible paint, Made up from different coloured pigments that did not mix in the base colour.

Yes used to be Called Porta flek, was doing just what you said and the painting division was on site, another subby plagued the foreman paintet to do his car, it was masked a very quick rub down and a blast, I think they had to use a high psi to get the stuff out, they also did a base and then a separate fleck and then a top sealer, 3 coates against 1 or two, as you rightly say at least 30 years ago.

The flicky machine was for Terolyn or Tirolene rendering & was messy.
PortaFleck was popular on public loos in the 70\80

Wouldn't be surprised if you could get a powder coating like that from the States, the range and choice you get over there is unbelievable - wish it was the same here. If you get a full size picture of the piece I could always try an find out.

yep me too...was it called spraylux or summit like that

I used the grey plasicote fleck paint inside the boot area of my 1966 chevy nova as its very similar to the factory finish,
put down a grey 2 pack base first, then added the grey plasticote fleck evenly and finally a clearcoat laquer.
