Speedglas 9100

Hi all, Used one of these at work today as my mask was in the garage and I wasn't exactly impressed with it, You have to put batteries in it and it seems sooo heavy and with a stupid skirt thing round the bottom. Much prefer my
Esab eye-tech!

Anyone else found this?

Well the skirt thing is an addon to protect your throat, It really serves it purpose when your in akward positions. Your eye-tech also has batterys so if you leave them in the speedglas its the same thing. i do agree they can bit heavy but its always a tradeoff between weight,size,viewing area and durability. Its the casette that is most off the weight

Haven't used a 9100 (have a 9002x) but replaceable batteries are a plus point IMO. As said all ADFs have 'em, the difference is some manufacturers seal 'em away inside. Not designed with replaceable batteries = no way i'd ever consider buying it...

If you are wearing skirts to work then you really need them round your bottom. Would not want sparks down there

Oooohh That wouldn't be nice! And my Esab has a solar panel I think so it never needs it's batteries changing! I've had my Esab nearly 3 years and It's now in use every day for most of the day and another thing with the speed glas is that it filckers with tig below about 30a.

Ive had a few speedglass's and now have a 9100XX IMO it the best mask I've ever used had loads in 25 years, I have the head and neck cover helps keep sparks off me and stops light from getting in the mask for better vision, batts last yonks and are easy to change thanks to quick access, the mask strips down in secs and all spares can be got as well as different config options too. Id have nothing else also works at 10a tig no problem with good control over sens etc, don't know what you mean by heavy as mines light as and very comfy.... are you weak?

I love my 9100xx. I did try a miller elite after my 9002 had seen better days, but found it very heavy, and wouldn't stay in the lifted position. I only used it a few times and went and bought the 9100. Don't think I will ever stray from speedy again.

No just used to my Esab, I just couldn't get on with it and I kept banging it on the fume extractor over the bench!

i use a a 9100xx

batterys last for ages i've not changed mine yet and there only a few quid as and when needed. IMO battery is not a disavantage when buying a mask possobly even an advantage as solar masks can be twerps in the dark.

it's comfy on my head, can see what doing. pritty much any welding supplys place is going to have speedglas lenses.

Bought a new helmet last summer, did consider the speedglas range but read a lot of reports of the headgear being of flimsy poor quality?
i'm sure those on here might disagree though.
in the end i went with the new Miller elite for tig use only with 'auto-on' and i'm very pleased with it,
still got an esab eye-tech that i keep for mig and plasma cutting, a good mask that i've had around 10years but the Miller is easily better,
also have an old Optrel auto mask that i keep in the van thats purely for on site arc welding which must be nearly 20 years old and still works fine.

The head gear on the 9000/9002 is a bit pants* but they're soooo light (not weight, the other one) and airy due to the side windows and exhaust port i can forgive 'em for the headgear

* I find it comfortable but it either won't stay up or won't nod down when tight enough to stay up... very narrow sweet spot which constantly changes. Not difficult to mod. The headgear on the 9100 is completely different but don't know if they fixed it. I've a vague recollection it's much better, i think someone fitted the newer headgear into a 9000 series (Gordan?)

I have a speedglas with air fed system and I hate it. Ok so I dont weld for long periods as I am not good at welding and often I am just tacking up and laying out, but apart from the fact its HAS to have the air pack on or it steams up the head gear is so uncomfy its a joke.

Is your Miller the digital version? I had the elite and it wouldn't stay up and felt heavy when it was up. I did like how light it was though when in clear state. I ask as I am tempted to try one of the digital versions.

My Elite is the new auto-on version but with the analogue dials,
the x-mode feature on the digital version is supposed to activate the dark state by the electrical field as well as the sensors which is the only difference.
and yes it is nice and bright when in the clear state
